the sun/carrier gear that is used as the pinion gear for the CIM motor attaches via small pan head screws to the plastic plate in question. It acts as a spacer plate and a bearing to ensure that the gear is properly set in the transmission and rubbing on the CIM mounting plate is not a big deal.
