How about this:
Use a sprung resistor-based steering wheel for turn.
Use a foot pedal for forward speed.
Use a sprung lever for strafe.
Use a switch swap the front and back of the robot.
To make these, you can buy a cheap 3-axis USB joystick, take it apart, and wire your own potentiometers to it.
