Cool find and nice post. Where are you reading that this will be a collaboration with FIRST? The Pop Sci article has a FRC robot image and the following quote but I am not reading that this will be connected or part of FIRST.
"Taking a cue from the FIRST Robotics Competition, DARPA is offering prize-based challenges to inspire high school students to design new robots. FIRST"
