This was discussed here a few years ago. There are several books you can read to help you get a broad background in electricity and electronics. My personal favorite is
The Radio Amateur's Handbook, published by
ARRL. They publish a new one each year, but not much changes (electrons are still electrons), so finding an older copy on eBay will save you some money. You will probably be able to find one at a local library as well.
It is not entirely a general introduction to electronics, but somewhat slanted towards radio communications. Nonetheless, the language is easy to understand and they do cover the basics quite well.
