how to set up an alternative netbook

Hi, I been looking through the posts, using search but I do not understand how to use a netbook as a backup.

Here is what I have done so far:
In the netbook, which uses NTFS format, I set up a partition drive for the FIRST usb image with about 4.88 gb of memory under FAT32, using the included Disk Management in Windows 7 Starter software (on the Gateway Netbook LT20).

I have tried to boot up using the USB Image but it is not being recognized, I went in to check the memory of the USB Image on the netbook and it states the drive is empty. I will try it on another computer to set up the imagine. Anyway, my question is two fold:
1) Did I do the right steps to create another drive that can run the FIRST software
2) How do I get the netbook to install the software from the flashdrive onto extra drive I created.

Thanking you.
