As for it being hyped... it exactly was Dean's fault for mentioning "IT". These types of hype are commonplace in many industries (
definately commonplace in the tech sector). It's a way of raising one's stock price and saying "Hey! hey! look at me! I'm special!" Then all the investors turn their heads and say "ooo... I want to know what he has." And they get excited and buy stock in hope that it will be "the next big thing."
Dean did exactly that. It's been done before. Microsoft does it all the time. So does many chip manufacturers, such as AMD, Nvidia, and Intel. Car makers do it as well... advertise their new cars before they are out.
I think the hype benefitted the segway more than it harmed it. If nobody knew about the 'breakthrough' and suddenly they came on the news with it... people would be... "WTH is that? One of those razer scooters? Bah. [changes channel]."
