"Good" is a matter of opinion...but I like buttons that have a solid background color with the team's logo, name, and number in a contrasting color. Using a picture as a background has the potential to look messy unless you really fine-tune it. The text looks better when it's "wrapped" to follow the curve of the button, if it's placed on the edge of the design.
I also don't know how button-makers work (my team's are diamond-shaped, and we order them from a company)...but it looks really messy when you're not accurate and the outlines of the circles show on the front of the button.
