It's a more effective and a faster way of getting information out to people who might be interested, such as comp results, picture galleries, dates, besides creating a casual and easy way for people to ask about the team (assuming they decide to go that route). You can post news quickly from more places than you might be able to with a standard site, and visual content doesn't need to be formatted prior to posting. Putting information and media on a standard site tends to be much more involved and time consuming, and can be somewhat difficult at comps since you spend most of your day at the venue or dealing with other team business. Granted you can minimize the time needed with a CMS setup, but it's still usually a lot faster to write a quick status post on Facebook about how a day of comp went than to write and proof a page long news post on a site
