from what i know, 72-pin memory needs to go in pairs to work right, otherwise it won't recognize it or something (that's what my dad tells me, and he seems to know more about computer hardware than i do.

and yes, getting hit with RAM hurts, a lot (i was subject to that after a stupid senior thought it would be funny to throw it around).
