http://laggod.org/gallery/rfc/irc/rfc.html ), if one says "/me" before a line, it is interpreted as an action, and the person who says it's name is placed at the beginning of the line (though I assume it depends on the client you're using).
If I were to say "/me is hungry", it would be printed to most people as "* FotoPlasma is hungry".
