Red face Basic Run Error

I was wondering maybe someone can help me out here! At our regional we were trying to load our Autonomous program onto the bot. It compiled right and everything but our IFI kept on giving us "Basic Run Error" that and for some reason It did not except the 2003 Default Code!! We had Tom form IFI stumped, I think he is still trying to figure it out! My teams programmer is going to get the latest version of the compiler and see if that works! It makes no sense!!! It compiled yet we got "Basic Run Error"..... has anyone had a similar problem?? Maybe it is something with our IFI. Our Bot has like Multiple Personalities.... hilarious I tell you!

Doesn't this typically happen if the serin statement is malconformed? Perhaps a sensor was added to the autonomous mode and the c_sensorX constant or the serin itself wasn't modified? This happenes sometimes in the "heat of the competition" where things are easy to forget.

It would help to have the code available to trace down the problem, though.

Ok just kidding, But to try and help with this, Is it possible that you can send me either a cut and paste or the file itself. Also when the you get the run error, doesn't it go back to the code and highlight the code where the error is? I pulled out what hair I have left on an error I had and all it was was a simple little space in the wrong place.

Try resetting it. It might fix the problem. Sometimes after we program that light comes on, but it goes away after we reset it.

Because it doesn't work with the default code, it is probably a hardware problem, and not a software problem, so posting your code (as others have suggested) probably won't help. That is assuming that you didn't accidentally modify the default code and save it as the same file.

Did Tom give you a replacement controller to try?

HELLO Adriana!!
(Did you guys have fun up there? I saw the webcast. Congrats on making it to semifinals.)

Ok about the program. Did you try to load the Program from FIRST website, or the 2003 defualt code that comes with BASIC Stamp?
(Tony became a programmer this season, as well as a webmaster, and driver. Pretty Freaky huh?)

YES! and no.

" and for some reason It did not except the 2003 Default Code!! "

Yes, I saw exactly this problem.
I had this same problem. I had been using my personal laptop to work on code, and we had another older laptop that belongs to the school on which we also were working on code. Originally, I put the 1.33 version of the Basic Stamp editor on my personal laptop. I was able to load code, we worked on some different things - no problem.

Then we decided to figure out the multi-bank programming. At this point I upgraded to the 2.0 Basic Stamp editor and worked on code. The first time I loaded it - Basic Run Error! After hours of failure I decided to try something... I loaded the known working single bank code - Basic Run Error! In short, I could no longer load and run code from my own laptop. My laptop was running Win 2000, SP 3. I contacted Parallax and they suggested uninstalling both versions and reinstalling only one, etc, etc. I tried many things with no success (as a software engineer I was totally frustrated at the lack of a solution).

No, I don't know how to fix it.
In the end, after many hours of investigation, I decided to drop it, and we did all further work on the older laptop (which runs Win 98). I was never able to get my laptop to properly load working code into the RC anymore.

Sorry for the lack of help. I guess you could try uninstalling and reinstalling, but I am afraid that it is not lilkely to help. My best advice is try using a different computer to load the code.

Good luck!

If you somehow ended up with an older Robot Controller in your bot, then you need to hit the RC reset after you download new code.

Other than that - I would stick with the older compiler - they dont call the new one a 'Beta release' for nothing :c)

those of us who have been writing SW for a while know from experiece that "Beta" means: Beta not use it!

Doubt it is the problem but we actually have 2 Dell laptops that when connected to the Program port, will not allow the RC to stay in run mode. Something in the implementation of the Dell serial port on those laptops bogs the RC down, unplug the laptop and it fires right up no problems.

This is actually due to the fact that your laptops are holding the DTR pin of the serial port in the wrong state. The DTR on the serial port is connected to the reset line of the Stamp, so basically you're holding the Stamp in reset whenever the laptop is plugged in.

To the original poster: did the Basic Run Error problem happen even when the laptop wasn't plugged in to the programming port?

Basic Run Error

If you look it up in the Basic Stamp manual, you'll find that the Basic Run Error is due to the Serrin Outputs.

Try to see if your inputs match the outputs and visa versa. Also make sure all your constats are enabled for the sensors, if you're using analog sensors.

Double check the SerrinOut and the constants in the Initialization ... that should solve your problem ... hope it helped
