Greetings Robotics Enthusiasts,
There are two very exciting and informative robotics workshops for the next 2
Saturdays.

Saturday, Nov. 16
Chatsworth HS, 10 AM – whenever we finish
Glenn Thoroughman from Bionic Bulldogs Team #60, Kingman, Arizona, will be
here to teach and share his expertise on drive systems. Glenn and his team
have won all of the regional and national design awards for the amazing robots
they have built over the years. There motto, “If you want to run with the big
dogs, you have to shift gears,” gives you an idea of the robotics technology
he will cover at the workshop. Please bring your lunch and meet at Chatsworth
HS at 10 AM this Saturday for a very informative workshop. Teachers,
students, parents, or professional mentors are welcome. Please RSVP with your
team #, school, and # of attendees to wwooten@lausd.k12.ca.us by Friday.
Directions: Take the 210, 5, or 405 Fwys to the 118 Fwy east, exit at DeSoto,
turning left (South) onto DeSoto, travel to the light at Devonshire, turning
left on Devonshire, travel to the first light at Lurline, turning right on
Lurline, travel past the first stop sign to the entrance to the school,
turning right into the school. The first bungalow on the immediate left just
as you enter the school is the V- building. Park and go around the V
building to the front and enter room V-303.

Saturday, Nov. 23
CSUN, Engineering complex, 8 AM – 5 PM
Park in lot B-6 or anywhere near the Engineering complex. There is no parking
enforcement on weekends, so there is no charge to park anywhere on campus.
8 – 9 AM Registration (CSUN Engineering organizations will be selling
coffee, bagels, donuts, etc.)
9 AM -12 Noon Session I
12 – 1 PM Lunch (box lunches available for $3: turkey & cheese, ham &
cheese, or cheese sandwich, chips, fruit, cookie, and drink)
1 – 4 PM Session II
4 – 5 PM Poster session

Drive System Drive System
Pneumatics Pneumatics

Other Robotics programs Other Robotics programs

Each team will get 3 tickets to all morning and all afternoon sessions.
Each team should have one designated individual to pick up the team
registration packet.
Please arrange to have your attendees meet during registration to distribute
the session tickets so that you have people attending all of the sessions
which are of interest to your team. Again, teachers, students, parents, and
professional mentors are invited.
We would like to ask all teams that have video capabilities to bring video
cameras and tripods to tape the sessions. If we have enough video set ups, we
can record all of the sessions as a resource for all teams. Please let us
know if you can help with video recording.

Simultaneously, there will be a FIRST LEGO League tournament going on in the
Engineering quad. You will find that event for kids 9-14 yrs quite exciting
and entertaining.

Veteran Teams
We are asking each veteran team to bring their past robot(s) and to prepare a
poster session in which they can share a design feature, fabrication
technique, or team organization/spirit/fundraising idea to share with all of
the other teams. Please have something to provide for all of the attending
teams either on disk, CD, or hard copy that they can take home with them.
This can be anything that you think will assist any of the other teams,
especially the rookie teams. If all teams volunteer, we can share the
responsibility and workload, and provide great resources for all teams.

In addition, we are looking for veteran teams to assist with some of the
sessions. Please volunteer for one of the following:

Drive System: a team that is planning to attend the Nov. 16 workshop at
Chatsworth who could present the information that Glenn Thoroughman will
deliver along with any other drive system information they have.

Electronics for Beginners: how the IF control system works with default
program, how to wire it, which items require relays and which require speed
controllers, and how it all works; making a board with the various components
hooked up to the control system is a great visual aid.

Electronics for Experienced: some additional electronics that can be
incorporated along with programming techniques to customize and improve the
control system over the default program.

Team Spirit Ideas: info about uniforms, swaps, buttons, and team spirit
ideas.

Please contact Wendy Wooten at wwooten@lausd.k12.ca.us to volunteer to assist
with these workshops and to advise us as to whether you can help with video
recording.

Please bring all items which you plan to share with other teams to the
Thursday, Nov. 21 SCRRF meeting at Beach Cities Robotics, 7 PM. You can come
as early as 6 PM to see their team meeting in the robotics shop.
