My computer loves Microsoft ARGH!! HELP ME!

Ok to all the smart computer people out there...,

My computer is on a LAN connection. My brothers computer is my server (which i am on now), and I am the client.

My network works and everything, but my internet connection has problems.... IT will let me go to the following websites: www.microsoft.com, www.xbox.com, www.hotmail.com, and www.msn.com (but it will not let me go to any of the links on msn). These are the only websites that it has let me go to. It will also not let me sign on AIM. I use Internet Explorer for my internet browsing, but i also have tryed Netscape Navigator. I also have tryed to change my settings and everything, but I have not gotten it to go to any other websites!!!

WHAT is the matter with my computer????? IS it that microsoft hates every other website besides theirs????

Thanks for your help,

BadBrad

See what happens when you get a computer and it's ran by a software monopoly?

Double-check your proxy settings in your internet control panel. If that doesn't do it, remove and reinstall TCP/IP...that's a place to start at least

What kind of client/server network are you talking about? Most home LANs are peer-to-peer, unless you are using MS internet connection sharing.

Can you ping IP addresses not owned by MS? Try 216.239.37.101 (it's one of google's servers). If you can ping that, try going to it in IE/Netscape by typing in the IP. If that works, I'd guess you have some DNS stuff setup incorrectly.

Go away, troll. That post had no useful information to help him out. You're a disgrace to anyone who calls themselves a geek. It's idiots like you that make geeks like us call Mac users idiots.

1. What error page does it display when you try to go to other sites? Does it instantly go to that error page or does it sit there and think for a few moments?

2. Is the problem present on both the server and the client or strictly the client?

3. What kind of connection do you have and who is the provider?

It could be a problem with your DNS server if you're having a problem with both the server and client. The DNS server is a separate server that associates IP addresses with domain names.

If it's only the client... I'd need more information on #3. If you PPPoE DSL then you might need to change your MTU size... reply and I'll get back to you on that.

Are you positive that you set up your Internet Connection Sharing on the server properly?

Go to (client):
Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
Type in IPCONFIG

Your IP addres should be something like 192.168.0.2
Your Default gateway should be 192.168.0.1
Unless you customized the default IP on the server.

If you aren't getting that, then either your network settings on the client isn't set up correctly, or Internet Connection Sharing on the server is not configured properly (or both).

To properly enable ICS on the server you have to go to Start > Settings > Network Connections (double click). Then, right-click the Dial-up connection you want to share... then there should be something like "Share this connection"... click that.

It should take you through the wizard....

On the client, to make sure your settings are set properly, you can go to Start > Settings > Network Connections (double click). Then on the left help panel there should be an icon that says "Set up a home or small office network". Click that. Follow the wizard. You should select that it connects through another computer.

If it still doesn't work another solution could be this. If you have crappy (cheap) network interface cards sometimes you may have to force it to 10mbps... some network cards have problems auto-detecting the maximum speed. Start > Settings > Network Connections. Right click Local Area Connection and hit properties. Hit configure under the network card. Under the advanced tab there are some settings. One of them will let you select your network speed. Select 10BaseT (not full duplex). This will be most compatible. Hit okay and reboot of course.

If it still doesn't work... either you did something wrong or the problem is in your network setup.

Are you using a crossover cable to connect the two computers? Usually this cable is yellow. You need a crossover cable if you want to connect them directly. If you are using a HUB, then you can use regular cables.

Hmmm lets see, you are using a bug-invested Operating system when us Mac guys are using Unix...... Who is the real geek there?

One thing that ticks me off, is that PC users are always fighting with their machines and Mac users are always praising their machine.

I have never met a Mac user who hates their machine, while you can go down to your local best buy and find at least 20 people who say they hate their PC.

This is not a MAC vs Windows thread.

He did not post any relevant information to help this guy out at all. This guy obviously doesn't have any $$$ to get his computer fixed, none-the-less $1500 to buy a new one.

This guy asked how he can fix his computer. He doesn't want to buy a new one. If I had not said anything I bet this thread would have filled up with uselss junk until this poor guy had to sort through 5+ pages of filth just to figure out how to fix his computer. It has happened before.

Mac OS is not Unix. It is derived from Unix.
