Unhappy i am a bit miffed

what is the deal?
no dvd submissions?

see, we have acsess to a dvd burner at school, we also have found a peice of software that allows you to encode dobly digital 5.1 sound. we would like to use this power we have to make a dvd that has the following fetures:

a version of the animation for 16X9 TVs

a letterbox version for 4X3 tvs.
a 5.1 channel soundtrack

a "making of" segment.

hella credits.

and an awesom menu system. we have a guy on our team who has figured out how to do all the menu and options stuff, so that would be sweet.

well we are gonna do it anyway, we are all about professionalism, but i just wanna know why it is not an option.

so what we are gonna send Autodesk is the 2cds they want, plus a dvd. it cant hurt..

If you're referring to the Q&A that's been on FRCTech2002, that was in regards to the Chairman's award, because they could not guarantee that the regional judges would have access to a player for DVD format. As far as the Animation, I haven't looked at that section of the manual, but if they are indeed disallowing it, it is most likely due to the fact that they are trying to get a somewhat common format so they can create their compilation video of all the animations to give out next year...

Also, I remember reading somewhere that currently, about 99% of DVD burners currently on the market do not burn into a format that home DVD players support.

Well Zenin...

Not every team has access to that technology yet. Perhaps in a few years, but it is an unfair advantage at the moment. It's just like the reason for doing video output became standard after 98 - prior to late 99/early 2000, CD-Rs were not standard. They cost upwards of 600 bucks, while a cheap video output card could go for 150.

Not to mention the fact that for chairmans, teams already have to create videos, so that video editing technology is pretty standard for most teams. Granted teams with access to better video output and editing technology had an unfair advantage, but video editing equipment at that time was more standard than CD-Rs.

Another thing to take a look at is the 2001 animation reel. If you watch the interviews, last year they used a complex database for scoring. I would imagine that this year they will be linking the AVI files to the database, making access to each animation and scoring much easier. So rather than create AVI files from tapes, all they have to do is copy them from the CDs. If you sent a DVD with menu features and stuff, they would have to rip it into an AVI, thereby defeating the whole "Burn to CD" requirement.

Besides, who really wants to go through 500+ DVD menus creating 500+ AVI files from them?

Good luck all, and Happy Animating!

wow sir, yer right

i think that thier goal is to have all the animations as AVI's so they can make a compolation cd. without vidcap. also the conversion from comp to tape to tape really screwed alot of things up.

luckly, here at work, i can use a professional master burner, w00t! so compatibility is not the prob. but you did make a good point. thanks for clearing that up. we are gonna do the dvd anyway, but not send it, it wouldnt get looked at! but man, for getting sponsors next year, a professional level dvd would rock.
