A Study of the Relative Popularity of Sexes' Pictures Based on Chief Delphi 'Who Am I' Gallery View Numbers

Between Studying for AP’s, Preparing for the SAT I’s and SAT II’s, Starting That Whole College-Search Dealie, Getting Less than Five Hours of Sleep a Night, and Regular Classes, I’m Feeling Kinda Burned Out Right Now

By Daniel Lopuch, Team 810

Abstract
While looking through the ChiefDelphi “Who Am I” image gallery, I began to notice that pictures of females seemed to have considerably more views than pictures of males. Viewing the gallery with pictures sorted by number of views proved this conclusion to be true. Graphing this data revealed an interesting relationship: as the rank of the picture decreased, the number of views decreased exponentially. Although there were more pictures of males in my data-set, female pictures had a clear majority in terms of the number of views. Pictures with female subjects dominated the Top 90 most-viewed pictures. However, this relationship switched and remained switched starting in the Top 100 most-viewed pictures. At this Rank Group, pictures with male subjects began to gain the majority in terms of number of views. In conclusion, although there are only 7.8% more pictures of males in my data-set than females, there is a clearly unequal distribution of wealth (defined as the number of views each sex receives) with females’ pictures receiving the majority of ChiefDelphi readers’ bandwidth.

Procedure
Viewing the ChiefDelphi “Who Am I” gallery sorted by number of views is an easy process. All one has to do is select the appropriate options (link ). With the gallery loaded, I began the process of copying the number of views each picture received and whether the picture was of a female or a male into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (attached). Because it was by hand and eye and because the process is a very repetitive and unexciting chore, I would not be surprised if I found one or two errors in the data sheet (i.e. my tired eyes may have mistaken a male for a female or vise versa). Once I reached my picture, I decided that if I got as far as my picture, I would have enough data for an accurate representation. In total, data for 127 pictures was collected.
Armed with all of the necessary data, I began to learn about the wonders of Excel formulas for the first time. Nobody wants to count and add all those view numbers and boy/girl counts and calculate percentages by hand; that’s what computers are for! Through the wonders of =COUNTIF(), I calculated the number of boys and the number of girls for the Top 10 through the Top 140 Rank Groups along with their respective percentages. In addition, the percent difference between the number of girls and the number of boys in a specific category was calculated using the formula: % Difference = (#girls - #boys) / (#girls + #boys)

Results
Figure 1 shows the number of views each ranked picture received.

Figure 1

What is instantly noticeable is as a picture becomes less wealthy (defined as the number of views it has logged), its wealth decreases exponentially. This creates a class of extremely wealthy pictures at the top of the scale and relatively poor pictures at the bottom of the scale. Starting at the 25th-wealthiest picture, the difference in wealth becomes more or less stabilized. It can be said that pictures ranked 25-127 belong to the same ‘class’ of pictures. When one adds up all the wealth (votes) and compares the amount of wealth the rich pictures have to the amount of wealth the poor pictures have, you will see that the top 19% pictures (pictures ranked 1-24) contain a disproportionate amount of the total wealth – almost 40% (28650 out of 79435 total views). Thus, it appears that the readers of ChiefDelphi are divided into at least two distinct classes.
An analysis of the Upper Class reveals further divisions. In two places, there is a split of 150 to 200 views, dividing the Upper Class into three Upper Classes (figure 2).

Figure 2

Interestingly, the three Upper Classes (dubbed the “Elite,” the “Bourgeoisie,” and the “Borderline”) are all dominated by female-subjected pictures, while female-subjected pictures are a minority in the Lower Class (dubbed “The Proletariat”). Another interesting phenomenon is the occurrence of the “Queen,” or, the fact that Melissa’s picture (ChiefDelphi: Yearbook50) occurs twice within the 6 wealthiest pictures. Thus, she is a member of both the exclusive Elite (a total of only four members) and the exclusive Bourgeoisie (a total of only 5 members) with an average number of 1589 views per picture (or more than 2.5 times the average: 621 views per picture).

I have mentioned there is an unequal distribution of wealth between males and females. However, the scope of this problem is not quite realized until one graphs the various membership percentages in each Rank Group against each other, as in Figure 3.

Figure 3

One can clearly see here that females make up the majority until the Top 100 pictures; in the Upper Classes and more than half of the measured Proletariat, females have an unmistakable majority of numbers. These numbers are shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4

Figure 4 illustrates the same relationship; for the first 9 rank groups, girls hold a clear majority in terms of numbers. Figure 5 shows the exact percent-variation in each Rank Group.

Figure 5

Conclusions
1. The number of views vs. a picture’s rank on the ChiefDelphi “Who Am I” gallery results in a logarithmic function, or a minority of the pictures hold the majority of the views (and ChiedDelphi readers’ attention).
2. Through the graph in Figure 1, it is seen that there is a clear distinction between the Upper Classes and the Lower Classes, as shown in Figure 2.
3. The Upper Classes are dominated by pictures of female subjects.
4. With an average of 706.6 views per girl compared to an average of 547 views per boy, ChiefDelhpi readers prefer females 13% more than males.
5. Female majority in terms of number of views continues for more than the Top 90 pictures
6. We must unite and work as one if we are ever to overthrow our female oppressors!
7. Excel’s Functions feature rocks if you have lots of numbers to crunch but don’t feel like spending ten hours doing it by hand.
8. Studying for who-knows-how-many tests/finals/SATs/etc. sure burns a guy out (see Secondary Title).
9. You’re crazy if you expect to get anything meaningful out of this analysis.

Shortcomings
There are several shortcomings to this report which should be considered in future updates. The first and foremost is the range of pictures chosen; due to constraints set by my attention span, after the 127th picture (which coincidentally, was my own), I became tired of copying the information by hand and decided I had enough. In the future, a ‘bot’ program that automatically collects information about a picture would greatly increase number of pictures that can be included in a data set and speed the process significantly, as well as make it less prone to human error.
Additionally, for a variety of reasons (i.e. the amount of labor required to manually enter it), the age of pictures was not taken into account. Future studies may wish to include a ‘Calculated Wealth,’ perhaps a ratio of number of views to age; rather than be sorted by the raw number of views, it would be interesting to gauge a picture’s wealth based on the number of views it received per time span.

OMG, and I thought that I had too much time!!!

I actually had noticed this trend. (althought I can't say that I wrote a report on it.. ) A factor that has to be taken into account is how long the picture has been in the gallery.

OMG, my picture is the 13th most viewed??! That's SOO scary, esp because 13 is my lucky number.

1107 views since Feb 07 2003...

my picture averages 19.4 views per day.

I should tell my math teacher about this... I'm so scared to know that the new math program that my school adopted and thrust all of us students into has a real life purpose.

Hey cool ... I'm in the "elite" group. Now, surely people view my picture because of me, not the girls in it, right?

Haha, anyway, I salute you for this monument to boredom. I wish I'd thought of it

It began with Andy Baker, and it continues with SuperDanMan.. if this is where the jovial/chit-chat facet of CD is heading, then bring it on.
