Adam-

If my conversations with Anthony are any indication, you are right on both of your observations. While my personal opinion is that MI Roboworks ought to get MTU more involved, I respect MI Robowork's desire and ability to call their own shots. I have personally offered to help them get MTU fired up about a team, but they have declined the help.

So... you still want to start an 'official' MTU team? I think you should - theres Hancock high school right across the lake. Also Tech has a great shop that is dedicated to student competitions that would make a great skunkworks for a FIRST team (getting in there is a whole other story, but, hey we have to start somewhere...).

Here's some food for thought. The LAST TWO Woodie Flowers Award winners are MTU grads! Hows that for some firepower to help get a team cranked up? I would be willing to talk to anyone you want me to to help, and I'll bet you could get Kyle Hughes to do the same. With the number of FIRST-experienced students at Tech (there must be dozens) and some vocal graduates like myself and Kyle, I think you will succeed.

I think it would be a good idea to propose the idea of a team run by senior-level mechanical engineering design students as part of a 2nd semester class. When I was there we did this with SAE Mini-Baja and ran it like a business (a successful one too ). Then you get an infrastructure to run the team so you can still participate without killing yourself.

Let me know what I can do to help.

Ken
