SMALL Parts Hubs

Posted by Tyson Wormus at 2/8/2001 11:35 PM EST

Student on team #159, Alpine Robotics, from Poudre High School.

Has anyone had any trouble with the Hubs for the wheelchair wheels cracking, breaking or otherwise failing? Our Hubs essentially shattered today while driving, we had replaced the bolts with longer ones. Any suggestions, Comments, Ideas?
Tyson

So far ours have been working fine although we haven't really driven the robot much. I would suggest replacing the spacers that SPI provides however. They are rather inadequate for the task. Just machine some polycarbonate spacers for replacements and you should be fine. I'd also recommend that you make sure the hubs are fully seated onto the wheel chair wheels and that the bolts aren't over tightened.

I heard this secondhand so it may not be accurate, but apparently several rookie teams in our area had problems with the hubs cracking due to overtightening of the bolts. The simple solution is to place spacers in between the two hubs. The not so simple solution is to machine your own out of aluminum or polycarb. My advice: If you machine your own, do it right: the two hubs should touch between the spokes.

We had a problem with the hubs to. There seems to be a compatibility problem with the polymer and locktite (thread locker). I don’t know if you used any when assembling the wheels, but it will definitely cause the hubs to fragment if they come in contact with it.
