Long Island Wrap-Up

Other on team #271, Mechanical Marauders, from Bay Shore High School and Verizon.

Okay folks. . . I'm going to put my long-winded rantings right on CD, rather than the website. It'll be a lot easier than writing all of that HTML and junk.

First, let me apologize for not updating Friday evening. Christina and I were invited to an after-party by some members of team #250, and were out quite late. Also, I'd like to apologize for not having a complete scoring breakdown. However, it became quite clear to me by early Friday that the scoring wasn't going to be much to speak of. With that, on to the show.

SCORING was ridiculously low on Friday, with the average hanging around 90 pts. My team started the day off with a lousy 20 pt. round, followed by another lousy 40 pt. round. What's worse is that we had a goal balanced in the 40 pt. round. The high, which hovered in the low 100's for most of the day, came as a result of running four robots to the endzone and stopping the clock as quickly as possible.

On Saturday, things really got interesting. Teams really started to stick their necks out and try things their machine was designed to do. Scores increased dramatically to reflect this new ambition. They were regularly in the upper 100's (which, for this regional, was a very high score). In the second to last match, G.R.R. balanced 2 goals, bringing in 348 pts. and wreaking absolute havoc with the seedings.

The final match could have doubled that score, as the alliance had 12+ hours to plan a strategy, but things didn't go as planned. I don't know if there's anything that can be done about it, or if it's happened at other regionals, but it doesn't seem fair to have a final grouping of only 4 machines when everything else has 12. It gave them a huge time advantage for strategizing. Anywho, if their strategy had worked, it would've been ~600 pts.

TRACTION problems seemed less prevelant on Friday and Saturday than on Thursday. Also, a lot of teams realized that they would have to help the robots along and push them over. So, traction wasn't really a factor in most matches (except our semi-final match, but I'll get to that) . . .

TEAMWORK was a problem during a few matches. It seemed to me as if some teams didn't want to admit that their machine was having problems. This resulted in a lot of lost points and unhappy campers on both my team and theirs. The particular team I'm speaking of, now known as "The Mole", did the same thing again in a later match, losing the time multiplier. It was a bit frustrating, especially when they refused to take the advice of one of our team members regarding a simple method to fix their robot. The finals, however, showed exemplary teamwork, as we saw robots completing tasks quickly and accurately, and being exactly where they needed to be at the time they needed to be there. The strategies went so much farther than assigning a task to each robot by further defining when they should accomplish it, and where they should end up. It was really great to see.

The FINALS, from my perspective. . . well, things could have gone better for us. We had a powerhouse alliance with a well-thought out, relatively conservative plan. Unfortunately, some unforeseen events threw the proverbial wrench into our plans, and things didn't work out for us. In our first elimination round, a goal full of small balls tipped. In our second round, G.R.R. had traction problems (for the first time in 3 days!!) and couldn't get both goals up the bridge. Team 417, the Stangbots, did a great job of helping them along to tip it the first time, and team 358, the Titans, made a play that deserved recognition to tip it back. They picked up a big ball, carried it over, and dropped it on the end of the bridge, giving it just enough of a push to balance the bridge within an 1/8" of the floor. Unfortunately, the time multipliers were gone, and our score was very low. It was still a good match though. So, thank you to our alliance (340, 358, 417, 496, and 271) for a great job. We all agree that the carpet seems to have worn down a lot over the two days of competition. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Finally, I'd like to offer thanks and congratulations to every team (even The Mole) for their participation in the regional. Particularly, I'd like to congratulate 263, 190, 250, 533, and 353 for taking home the Championship. I'd like to thank Team 340 for choosing us as their first pick alliance partner, as well as the rest of our alliance for a great job. And, I'd like to thank the rest of my team for doing such a wonderful job driving and maintaining our flawless machine ( . . . our 'glittery' machine if you ask Woodie). It was one of a handful of machines that performed consistently in every match, and people noticed the good job we did. So congratulations everyone on a job well done! We're looking forward to the advantage our driving experience will bring us next weekend in NYC.

Oh. . .post-script. . . Despite the rules to the contrary, we were able to bring our robot back to the shop until Monday afternoon even though we're attending a regional next week. I missed a good portion of the argument, but it revolves around us transporting the machine their ourselves, and it must arrive on Tuesday. I don't know how our sponsor got them to agree to it, but the precedent has been set. So, if you're in a similar situation, and would like the time, see what you can do about getting it. I don't know that I agree with FIRST's decision to let us keep it, but I thought it was important that everyone know about it.

Also, I should have pictures up on the website later today . . . http://www.geocities.com/longislandfirst/

~ Michael, who is exhausted.

Thanks for the update Michael. It's always good to
hear about these things (especially when you haven't
competed yet).

Just my personal thoughts...
