With the addition of the new scoring system (that the winning alliance gets three times the losing alliance's score), the rule that you learn who your ally is 2 minutes before the match has lost effect.

If Dean and his cronies are trying to get us to work together (meet new people) and strategize more, eliminating this old rule would accomplish this even more. As FIRST grows with hundreds of more teams, knowing who your ally is in advance will allow strangers to meet and teams to make new friends.

...But just my two cents, let me know what you think...

One peve I have is that at nationals on all the fields except one we were allowed to go up onto the field before we found out who our partner was but on the one other (i think it was watt) we would be stopped in the tunnel and were forced to wait there with our robots untill the 2 min. started then we would have to try and get up on the field and set up while our stradagizing time was running out. I think that this should have been handeled the same way on all fields.

I agree that 2 minutes is very tough to work with, but too much time has it's own set of negatives.

If everyone knows everyone else's partners, it is possible that back room deals could be struck that may not be in the best interest of the FIRST program.

Let me give you an example: Team A is on the bubble to be a picking team (or perhaps even a #1 seed), Team B is also on the bubble. Everyone can look at the schedule hours ahead of time and see that Team B has a chance to either make it or break it in the second to last round when they are partnered with Team C (running against two machines that have not moved since the practice rounds). Let us further suppose that Team C is not likely to get picked on their merits.

SO... In this case, Team A has a very strong incentive to have a discussion with Team C. 'Hey,' they might say, 'you might get picked in the first round if Team B does not make the picking teams and we (Team A) do -- if Team B makes it and we don't, who can say what your chances are?'

While what I know of most FIRST teams tells me that this is not very likely to occur, a 40% growth rate insures that it WILL happen (or at least APPEAR to happen) sooner or later.

I suppose that we should make rules that help to avoid the temptation to teams as well as to avoid even the appearance of dirty dealing.
