scoring penalty unfair

Engineer on team #237, sie h2o bots, from watertown high school watertown ct and sieman co. Posted on 9/29/2000 10:46 PM MST In one match at Epcot our team scored 23 points and the other side scored 9, however at the end of the game we were told the other side were penalized for some errors. The first judges took 6 points off their score so instead of our team getting 27 QP 3x9 we only got 9 QP 3X3 points?. so who were FIRST punishing, the teams that made an error or our teams who did their best in the game to win. The loss of the 18 QP'S made a great difference to our standing score so does any one have any thoughts. I have been through the video so many times but from start to finish I can find no error nor is there a single flag thrown down, The team that made the errror should have lost the points but the winning teams should have gotten the full score. Does any one agree. nick |

I hope that FIRST puts a clause in the rules addressing this issue for the next season of robotics. |

How about giving the penalty to opponents?

OR How about this: In addition to your score teams would get a 'penalty score' The penalty score would be added to the losing score when they calculate your opponent's Qpoints ALSO, when they calculate your team's Qpoints, the Penalty Score would be subtracted from the loosing score. Win or loose, a penalty would help your opponents & hurt your team. What do you think? Joe J. |

What if the game was closer? Opponent has 12 pts, you have 10. Opponent has a 3 pt. penalty. Does it make sense to get 45 or 36 Qpoints when you only scored 10 pts yourself? |

You should have gotten full score. I have a rather biased view: they just didn't think about how it would affect the winning team, they just thought of how it would affect the losing team. -=Matt=- Team 69 Intelligence Agency (TIA) |
