18 balls in goal.

Posted by nick237 at 1/20/2001 6:25 PM EST

Engineer on team #237, sie h2o bots, from Watertown high school ct and sieman co.

Its possible to get 18 balls in a goal. If you put three balls in the goal and had an arm to push the high ball horizontal and next to the first 2 then you get three balls in a triangle flat on the base.
The next three go the same way, Its possible to get sets of three 6 high, and a big one on top?
try it by hand.

18 WOW...
we have been using 14 as our max, and that is without a big ball...
i think it would be hard for a robot/human player to get in all 18 though. We were
experimenting with it today...

However consider the time and energy as well as skill to do so. Do you really think it will be possible to do so given the time we have and the structure (durability) of the goal?

Oh Michael, Yea of little faith. A robot pushes a goal to the human players (4) "and they load". While they load the same bot pushes the balls down firmly.
I tried it by hand and it took only a little amount of weight to seat the third ball.
The only problem is we only have three small balls but im sure it could be done.
If your team has more than three try it and let me know how it went. If we can jamb them in real good we could make life misserable for the volunteers.
18 balls is possible in the goal but FIRST will double all balls over 18 and triple any score over 20......

Of course you can, but can your robot do it?

It could be done...depending on the torque exerted on that ball (force exerted divided by the torque arm). Would it be enough? If its not that much, then yes, it can and most likely will be done (500 teams...lots of designs :-) ).

Is it worth the extra time? I don't know. There will be three other robots helping out, but what happens if none of the others can pick up balls (gotta love Team HYPER's luck), and you are the only one that can? All the other robots were designed to do were to get to the end zone quickly, and maybe balance a goal (assuming that your team inherits Team HYPER's luck).

I think that doing that would be worth it, you get 18 points times all those mulipliers and other additional points.

Good Luck.

at least you never had an alliance partner roll 2 feet and have their motors/gearboxes explode mildly damaging your robot in the process...that honor is reserved for Team 250!!

Beside the point that it is possible to fit 18 balls in the goal, Nick brought up another good point that some robots are going to try to do this. They don't HAVE to completely fit 18 balls in the goal, but as long as their designs allow them to some what stack the balls in a good way, the goals are going to be filled up much more. And you know what, at the finals you can assume every alliance get all the multipliers, so every single ball counts. And among the many small ball transporters out there, the ones that's going to shine are the ones who can put lots of balls in really fast.

I see your point but that would be kind of hard to do with a robot that probably won't move very well anyway so why try to push it?
