FIRST Remote Kickoff is coming...

FIRST Remote Kickoff 2004

Well, our NYC FIRST Director this week committed our site for hosting a Remote Kickoff 2004. While we are struggling to top last year’s R-Kickoff event, the financial part of it is “biting” us. We’re even thinking of cutting out the breakfast (was that a scream I hear?).

The question I have for the FIRST/CD community is what do you want to see and what do you NOT want to see at the Remote Kickoffs?
It is early enough that your comments could influence the kickoff committees from around the country; so please give us your thoughts and constructive ideas.

The very minimum to see is at least 1 scoring object, a section of the field structure that shows people all they need to know what its like, and a Live feed of the kickoff broadcast.

For example, the 2003 season, you really only need 1/3 of the ramp, or maybe a full one providing 3 teams are each willing to pay for a 1/3 of the ramp... And a bunch of bins. If you think about the 02 season, the things that need to be there are the goals and soccer balls.

I think if you talk to the teams before hand, and let them know approximately what the cost is (but not what the objects are), then you can get enough teams who are willing to take the pieces home and pay the cost for making them. That will probably off set the cost for the local FIRST groups enough to be able to afford remote kickoffs.

Then all you really need is a place with interenet, a big projection screen with a projector, and enough seats. Most colleges should have at least that much. Would be very easy for them to open a big room up Saturday morning to do this.

Also, if teams are worrying about breakfasts... the local teams could arrange to go get breakfast after the kickoff together, and it will give them a chance to digest the game.

For those of us on the east coast, it would happen to be lunch time after kickoff.

Guarding the kits and manuals...

Last year a guard was hired to watch over the
kits and manuals for one hight.
That was very expensive.
In 2004, we are planning to cut that cost by having a volunteer watch the stuff. Payment is a case of soda and pizza. All the TV and internet surfing he/she wants.

Any volunteers?

!

If only Jason give us the same offer... I will jump right at it! mmmmmmm....... pizza...........

Was there really a need to have someone guarding the kits and manuals? I didn't think any teams would actually go that far to know the game ahead of time. You would think Gracious Professionalism will hold...

But there are probably some people out there who will do anything to know the game ahead of time, just for the fun of it.

well...

...it was our first year as a remote kickoff site and the school did not guarantee the safety of the FIRST kits. I think the team students were the last things on our mind.
Actually the guard was also watching over the ramp & platform we builded. We gave him orders to kill if anyone peeks under the covers. (with what I don't know)

thats because i tend to show this little thing called control when i am in public, and i also keep it in my mind, that i have more strength than 2/3 of my hs's senior years varsity football team.... which isnt saying much for me but anyway, when the job calls for anger i got plenty bottled up to provide

Glad to have you!

Hi Mike522,
We would be happy to have you as a volunteer. This year, especially with the lost of Prof. Russo from Polytechnic University the running NYC FIRST is much more difficult.
BTW- I work down the block from you, 2 Metrotech so contact me (rwong@siac.com) or visit!

NYC FIRST! has lots of volunteer work this coming year:

Sept’03- we are launching the NYCFIRST web site to serve the NYC FIRST community for FRC and FLL teams. We are planning to offer all the NYC teams their own web pages. Volunteers will contact schools and help spread the word. You can help us with the Staten Island teams like 522!

Oct/Nov’3- we need volunteers to run FLL and FRC workshops at Poly U. FLL is 5 weekends and FRC is also 5 weekends of training and workshops with teachers and teams.

Dec’03- we need volunteers to run local FLL competitions in SI, Bklyn, Qns, and Man, oh... and da Bronx.

Jan’04- we need volunteers to run the Remote FRC kickoff at Poly U.

Jan’04-Feb’04- we need volunteers to as advisor and coaches to rookie teams.

Feb’04- we need lots of volunteers for the NY State FLL Regional Competition.

Mar’04- we need lots and lots of volunteers for the NYC FIRST FRC Competition.

And this is only the major list of volunteer events!
