We won a couple of matches in 2002 with dead partners. This weekend, we came pretty close, too. We were against Truck Town, and our partner never even left the starting box. We managed to knock the whole wall of bins over, kill a stack of 6, and push 68 off of the ramp, all by ourselves. We lost 20-6, but it was still a fun and exciting match.

Yeah Ryan you have to remember something tho. We won a lot of our first matches against teams that either 1 didn't show up, broke mid match, or it was 2v1.

Just because we had 2 matches that you lost because our partners broke don't complain

Also remember that we won a match later ( 101 ) against the number 1 seed 147 and 1065 who did very well with only 1 functional robot And we snapped a wheel completely off in that match, so don't fret it, stuff happens and totes fall the wrong way. Its just all in the name of the game.

If I were you I'd be more upset about bots breaking in the finals, saying they were fine and not working...

There is a vast difference between a broken/dead bot and one that has not been assembled.
At the NY regional one team had a box of metal and a box of electrical parts. They worked all through Thursday and Friday and never competed once. All the weight was on the back of the bot so it fell over with out even moving, so they hunted around and found 2 "BRICKS"they wraped the duct tape around them and used them for balast. The bricks had a duel job, they also stoped the front casters from bending and falling off.
Due to the hard work and great driving skills of their aliances they continued to score high "QP's" and by the end of the games they were seeded 12th. The top 8 teams sided within them selves so that this team soon became a picker!!!!.
It was heart breaking to watch this team struggle to assemble a pile of junk into a moving driving pile of junk. This team probably spelt doom for many teams as some were teamed up with them several time. A year of hard work, 6 weeks of intensive design and building could be destroyed by the inability of a team that could not build a functioning robot for the competition.
There should be a minimum standard for submiting a robot to compeet in a FIRST competition. They are inspected and have to pass this trial prior to getting on the field, it is also my understanding that any bot that doesnt pass inspection cant play and that "ALL" bots have to be inspected by a certain time on Friday morning.
There was a lot of teams who lost a year of dreams and hard work because of this team who rather than withdraw from the competition stayed to ruin it for others.
If your wondering, we did have one game where we were alianced with this team and we did win but "could" we have done better with a functioning robot!!!.

I wonder what page "BRICKS" are listed under in Small Parts.

My favorite match at UCF this weekend was a match where we were the only working robot on our side. It added an incredible challenge that led to huge payoff and rampant victory celebrations--in short, great fun for all.

801 did the same thing but I have to say they were prob. my fav team.. tho they did not use bricks and they had the sweetest sprokets I've seen in a long time.. I think those things could double as a saw blade.. and their treads owned to bad they never got on

We had our last match with them and that sat spinning in circles and it was great because we still won the match against the number 1 seed and a very recognized rookie team and got 255 qp's which boosted us to our final resting spot at 3rd seed

Coming from a 'broken' team, I can honestly say that it's not easy to go to your alliance partner and tell them that you can do nothing for them... especially to a team who is doing very well.

I know that your team probably worked very hard to get to where you stood, and you should be proud of yourselves. Just remember that your alliance partner did not choose to be broken, and give yourself a pat on the back for competing so well.

We were broken several matches. We were constantly one step behind our breaking transmission. We at least showed up to all but one match (including using our dead robot to block team 79 from going under the bar in a match with 180, which they won for us ) . The worst feeling in the world is to let your alliance down. We worked nonstop to make all the matches we could. I seriously considered declining when team 212 picked us, but we felt they must want us if they were willing to pick us. I remember all the years we have been paired with alliances that didnt show or were just plain dead, and thinking pretty harshly of them. When the situation is reversed you realize how unfair you were to them. Broken robots are a fact of life, and it WILL happen to you. If you've got a match coming up with an ally that's broken, offer to help. If you can't help, try to find a way for them to help you, so they dont feel completely useless. Even if its just their human player taking advantage of the extra time they get to help build a stack.
