Although this is cool I really don’t see the advantage of it for the Lego League competition. Wouldn’t the motor used for the shifter be better used for some sort of special function? When does the robot really need to have any pushing power?

very clever, tytus. Its amazing what legos are capable of, huh? My favorite is a copy machine . . I built three or four of those, with varying degrees of success.

I like using a worm-gear to shift. A very cool design.

If you have an analog video camera, you would need a video capture card. Pinacle is a big maker of these. To use is you would just plug the output of the camera that could go into a TV or VCR into the capture card, tell it to start recording on your computer, and tell the camera to roll the film. You can get a standard capture card for under $100.

Re: pic: 2 speed shifty on the fly Lego Bot

That's nifty, Tytus. I built something similar this summer, and then drew it up in MLCad. I don't have any of the Lego pnuematics, so I did it all with motors, which was an interesting challenge in itself. The left wedge wheel is the output, and the right goes to the shifting motor.

For anyone interested:
4 Brick 1 x 16
3 Brick 2 x 4
1 Electric Technic Mini-Motor 9v
2 Plate 1 x 2
3 Plate 2 x 4
6 Technic Axle 4
2 Technic Axle 8
1 Technic Axle 10
1 Technic Axle Joiner
2 Technic Brick 1 x 16 with Holes
15 Technic Bush
6 Technic Bush 1/2 Smooth
6 Technic Gear 8 Tooth
1 Technic Gear 24 Tooth Crown
4 Technic Gear 40 Tooth
2 Technic Gear Rack 1 x 4
1 Technic Plate 1 x 4 with Holes
2 Technic Wedge Belt Wheel
1 Technic Worm Screw

It's huge and unwieldy, but it works, and it's kinda cool.

Re: pic: 2 speed shifty on the fly Lego Bot

very impressive.. i've tried for a while to make a good shifter for a lego bot but i could never get it to shift on the fly.. i even tried to use pneumatics and that wasn't the best either. good job.

Re: pic: 2 speed shifty on the fly Lego Bot

That looks cool. Did you do it to help with a lego bot or did you do it just for fun and to say you did. That is sweet though and looks really cool.
