2-minutes is not enough -- hours is too long...

If everyone knows everyone else's partners, it is possible that back room deals could be struck that may not be in the best interest of the FIRST program. Let me give you an example: Team A is on the bubble to be a picking team (or perhaps even a #1 seed), Team B is also on the bubble. Everyone can look at the schedule hours ahead of time and see that Team B has a chance to either make it or break it in the second to last round when they are partnered with Team C (running against two machines that have not moved since the practice rounds). Let us further suppose that Team C is not likely to get picked on their merits. SO... In this case, Team A has a very strong incentive to have a discussion with Team C. 'Hey,' they might say, 'you might get picked in the first round if Team B does not make the picking teams and we (Team A) do -- if Team B makes it and we don't, who can say what your chances are?' While what I know of most FIRST teams tells me that this is not very likely to occur, a 40% growth rate insures that it WILL happen (or at least APPEAR to happen) sooner or later. I suppose that we should make rules that help to avoid the temptation to teams as well as to avoid even the appearance of dirty dealing. My 2 cents. Joe J. |
