WHEELCHAIR WHEEL MAXIMUM?

Posted by Anton Abaya at 1/18/2001 8:40 PM EST

Coach on team #419, Rambots, from UMass Boston / BC High and NASA, Mathsoft, Solidworks.

Can anyone confirm that the maximum # of these wheels that we can use is 6 and not 10?

Thanks...

The maximum would be ten. However, the maximum you could have of one size would be 8. You have 4 in the kit (2 six inch, 2 8 inch) and are allowed to purchase an additional 6 ranging in size from 5 inch to 8 inch. So, you COULD have 10 wheels, the 4 from the kit, and an additional 6 from the additional hardware list, but you can't have 10 of the same size. Hope this helps

this is getting annoying...

first we wanted to do treads but found out after a day of looking for parts that we could not buy belts outside spi.

then we find out that we can because there was a mistake. but we decided to use 10 wheels instead.

then we find out 10 wheels is prohibited so we design to make our own wheels....

but now i'm not sure if 10 is doable because it's easier for us to make if we could use 10.....

SO WHAT IS IT? maximum of 10 wheelchair wheels? or maximum of 6 wheelchair wheels???? aHHHHH we're falling behind schedule wasting days to redesign over a rule that is not clear!

help!!!!

-anton

ps. in other news, we're making legs for our robot. let's see FIRST stop us! ha!

Um, I don't know Anton, i think you might want to call FIRST again, but talk with Eric. You are allowed 6 wheels on the ADDITIONAL hardware list (i.e. addition to the kit). Therefore, it seems pretty clear to me you can have 10 total, 4 from kit, and 6 from add hardware.

Jason

Anton,

The wheels are 5 buck each yes? How many are you going
to order?

I suppose that you need to order at most 6 and at least
2. That means that you have a risk of 4 wheels or $20.

Here is what I recommend:

Order the wheels, if FIRST changes the rules to only
allow 6 (and it WOULD be a change, because to me, the rules
as written now clearly allow 10 -- 4 from the kit and 6
more from the additional hardware list), find me in the
pits at the Nationals in Florida, I will by your extra
wheels from you. You get your money back and I get
some more wheels for our stash in the gray cabinet in
the corner. Everybody goes away happy and that will be
that.

Joe J.

P.S. I see no reason for FIRST to change the rules, so
I am sure that I will NOT be buying your wheels, but I
am good for it in any case. I urge you do design your
robot assuming that you have the 10 available. JJ

10 wheels it is......

As for the wheels, if first changes the rules, i'm going to order a thousand wheels and send them one everyday.

ps. thanks for the reply. my mind is calm and i can finally get sleep.

Legs are OK Anton and they are encouraged but you must not use any "SOCK,S" as there not in the small parts book. we should contact SPI and ask them to add them next year.

Ok. your not allowed socks but you are allowed string, so knit a pair, assuming your bot has only 2 legs/feet.
EASY.
