On-Line Scouting Problems

Posted by Kyle Fenton at 1/29/2001 4:17 PM EST

Student on team #121, Islanders, from Middletown High School and NUWC.

Hey,
I have heard a lot of people say that they want an
on-line scouting book that doesn't require a web
connection. Also people have asked me to provide
links to the other on-line scouting book, just incase
the information from one scouting book is not there
but is on another scouting book. Also scouting
books can't get every team in FIRST, or the
information is incomplete. But however if we
provide links to other on-line scouting books, it
would be easier for people to look up information.
And that is basically what we want to do. Not say,
My database is the best, and yours suck. No, I
hope some people can reply to me if this kind of
on-line scouting book alliance here so we can
organize this into the best web experience for
looking up information.

Another idea that popped up is that some may
build a search engine like on Chief Delphi or
Sharing FIRST. That can launch several web
browsers at one time of all the on-line scouting
book pages.

Another problem is portability. Like I mention. Here
is a couple of suggestions that I thought of.

1. On my web site, I have a printer friendly option
that can let you print out every team, and stick it in a
three ring binder, and you can add notes and
scribble on it with comments after you print it out.

2. At Feb. 20th I am also going to make my on-line
scouting book downloadable so now web
connection is required. Because the competitions
aren't going to have wireless web access. This is
good if you have a laptop and convent to carry
around at the competition. However the pictures
will not come out, because it would be just to big of
a file.

3. Another Option, although I have never done this,
is
to make in Palm Pilot format. I have seen people
with palm pilots at the competition, and that would
be a very convenient option. I am a quick learner,
and I think I get downloadable tools to make this
happen.

Anymore good ideas?

That's exactly what my team is doing except that we offer print outs in the pits.
