how effective do you think robots going under the bar

Other on team #25, nbths robotics team , from nbths and bms.

I have been looking at alot of pictures of robots. And with the exception of 1 or 2, I think the task of going under the bar is going to be very hard to do, with haveing another effective job or task. I think it is just to much to compact. There are 2 robots which impressed me so far. but all in all I want to know what other people think about robots going under the bar. What jobs would be good for them.

I think that going under the bar is a good skill to have. However, it would only be used to maximum efficiency if there was one or two teams of the alliance that could ONLY go over the bridge.

If you saw the pictures of ROBBE Xtreme...even bots that go under the bar can grab big balls. They are also good for goal balancing (or so I think, imho).

Just my personal thoughts...

After examining strategy for a while, we decided that to have ANY type of robot that could traverse the field without the use of the ramp would be a great advantage. So, we designed our robot to go under the bar. We squeeze down to a 12" maximum height, and we have pneumatic-actuated 8" wheels that drop down to allow us to climb over the 4x6. Yes, our robot is ultra-compact and packaging was a VERY big challenge. yet, we balance 2 goals on the ramp and pick up big balls. Our arm is long enough that we can be on the floor and put a ball on a goal that is balanced in the middle of the ramp. So, yes, going under the bar is and will be hard, but it seems possible. We hope everything works!

As more teams discover that two robots can go over the bridge at the same time, it starts to negate any time savings that a rail hopper/limboer may have.
My two cents worth.

ok, what is the point of using the bridge? it wastes time! our robot uses a smaller front set of wheels to jump the block on the floor, and can still fit under the bar. it is much quicker, and has an arm to drag goals around. why would anyone build something to go over the bridge? COME ON!!! its just senseless!
