New! Improved! 267 Practice Videos!

Posted by James Jones at 03/19/2001 1:55 PM EST

Engineer on team #267, The Demolition Squad, from North Broward & St Andrews and Motorola.

Here are two videos of Team 267 taken the Monday night after KSC. For those of you that saw the KSC video we were kind of slow and had problems going over the ramp. We have regeared and locked the transmissions in one gear (they were slipping out of gear under load - never did it in 2 weeks of practice - drove us crazy!) so that issue is DEAD. We now have an extremely reliable drivetrain. In the videos you will see what we can do with a little cooperation (both goals on, in the endzone in 38 sec.) and what we can do by ourselves ( both goals on, in the endzone in 57 sec.). Note: We are planning changes at EPCOT that should take 10 - 15 sec off that 57 sec. number. We are also much more focused on strategy and timing that we were at KSC!

Go to www.team267.org to see our team.

My Friend George,

We are Trying hard very hard to be a Kinder, Gentler Demolition Squad this year. I will admit there was one "incedent" this year involving a robot we inadvertantly pushed off the side of the ramp with parts and batteries flying. That was a minor aberation for which we appologized profusely. I assure everyone that potential alliance partners have nothing to fear from us (mostly). Boy, sometimes you try to change and everyone just keeps bringing up your past;~)

BTW, who pushed who around last year burning out who's motors?

High gear or low gear?

Are you guys going for a G. Jones special next year?

Maybe we can get together and come up with a good shifter. Still need that analog speed sensor though.

I've got a few ideas, but getting them through FIRST and InnovationFIRST might prove the hardest part.

Congratulations on the Silver medal and the other recognition.

PICK US NEXT TIME!!! We could have helped last year and we can work well together this year. At least you know we won't dump over.

Low gear, we're LOCKED in low. I still can't figure out why but the shifting gearboxes that gave us absolutely no trouble during 2 weeks of hard practice started poping out of gear at KSC, even rebuilt ones! Besides, shifting does not seem to be all that beneficial this year. The distances you drive without stopping or turning are pretty short. The few seconds you gain getting from the ramp to the endzone you lose waiting for the trannies to shift. We should be running right about your speed at 5ft/sec.

As to next year, unless they open back up the gears and sprockets we're going to have to get pretty creative to build a light, small custom shifting gearbox from SPI parts. I don't think we could have handled the weight of one this year.

As far picking, to date we have only been pickEES. I am very grateful teams these last 2 years have picked us. I can only aspire to one day being a pickER. Perhaps that's an odd title to aspire to.

Yet another interesting design in balancing the goals on the bridge. I love how you use the pneumatics to power the arms... Can't believe how strong that is.

Looks like we are all facing another tough competition in National... Hope to team up with you in a match!

Good Luck!

Way kool Drive System! What did you use in it? Treads of just wheels and what motors did you use. Can't wait to see it in person!

It's a timing belt with supergrip backing driven by the drill motors through a modified drill gearbox. We remade the drill output housings to incorporate a needle bearing rather than the inefficient sleeve bearing.
