ROBOTICA! New Competition

Posted by Raul at 03/30/2001 8:57 AM EST

Engineer on team #111, Wildstang, from Rolling Meadows & Wheeling HS and Motorola.

Did you see the new robot competition is to be shown on TLC (The Learning Channel) on Wednesday nights?

It seems that the whole robotic competition thing on TV is really starting to heat up. I just wish FIRST would leverage this excitement and get us on TV and thus more publicity.

imho, Dean, et. al. missed a golden opportunity this year by not designing a TV friendly game. I think that with the right game this year, we could have been on Prime Time National TV next year.

Once again, I call upon my experience as a recovering Die Hard Cubs Fan...

...Wait 'til next year.

At the Langley Regional earlier this month, The Arts and Entertainment Channel spent numerous hours filming the teams participating in the regional. They plan to have a 1-hour special of this year's FIRST Robotics Competition at the beginning of May, quite possibly as an opener to a new season of "The Competition." So look for this special on the A&E link below and find out exactly when it will come on. Also, if anyone is interested in seeing what the fields look like from last year's National Competition, they are posted at the Metal-In-Motion website (http://www.metalinmotion.com)

Joe,
It's great to know that I'm not the only die-hard CUBBIE fan out there! Next week will be really great, opening day for the Cubs Monday and then the Nationals. Does it get any better than that??
Later,
Mike Carron

Talk about torture - I went to 26 Cubs games in 1969 - ouch!

Get this -
It cost $1.00 to get into the bleachers or grandstand and seating was first-come-first-served. It cost $.12 for me to take the El train from the north to Addison St. (student pass). It cost $.25 for a hot dog and $.10 for a drink (7-up all the way - Dew didn't even exist). So the whole thing was about $2.00 per day.

I remember a stretch of 2 weeks where I went to 10 games including 2 doubleheaders.

Man, those were the days.

WOW,
That was the time. I went to an Atlanta Braves Game last year (closest team) and spent a fortune. It was $28.00 for the ticket, $6 to ride MARTA into town, $4.50 for a slice of pizza, and $4.00 for a large Coke. $42.50 for the entire experience not counting gas for the two hour drive into Atlanta. But at least they beat the Mets 1-0. Maddux pitched a gem .

Very true, when I talked to the producers of Robotica they said they had contacted FIRST and were thinking about filming FIRST for TV but ultimately decided against it. He wouldn't tell me why but he said as long as Robotica is around it's very unlikely FIRST will be on TLC.

Our team was invited to attend a taping of robotica a couple weks ago, and It doesn't seem as challenging as the first competetion. Perhaps FIRST should promote itself on TV more, as its brand of robotic competetion is more "noble" and encourages more innovative design.

I competed in Robotica with Hamerschlag. I was in FIRST during HS, team 10, and my teammate was also in FIRST on team 267. That was supposed to be the "focus" of our team and I tried to talk up FIRST a bit, but it was kind of hard to get into specifics.
The event was more fun than FIRST or Battlebots, but as a competition it was less challenging and technical. Not a big deal since we were totally outmanned, outsmarted, and outbudgeted. I only got a month of build time and I pretty much scraped together some parts from my middleweight Battlebot, so it turned out underweight, underpowered, and rather boring visually. Fortunately our events turned out to be pretty exciting and we did pretty well; especially considering we were worked pretty much through the night the days before.
The show begins this Wednesday, April 4th, and airs every Wednesday at 9PM (and midnight I think.) Our episode is the first one on April 18th; they show two a night.
