military anyone?

Posted by Chris Hardman at 05/08/2001 10:13 PM EST

Student on team #111, WILDSTANG, from Rolling Meadows and Wheeling High schools and motorola.

SO has anyone considered going into the military? I know that i leave for basic aug 13, but will have an abscence from first for 2 WHOLE YEARS, what am i to do, i guess i'll just have to run over some people in my hummer, and track wildstangs ramp bot on my radar. well so yea i leave aug 13 for Fort Knox then to Fort Bliss for 22 weeks, then wherever they put me. The 4 years i've been involved with this program have been outstanding. ALl of the wonderful people i met (too many to list) I love doing this stuff and when i get out beleive me i will start a team at Western Illinois University,

See you all in 2003

Chris
Good luck in the Army.
I really enjoyed my 20 years (4 years active, 16 years reserves) in the Air Force.
Why wait until you get out of the service to start another team? Maybe if you get a stateside assignment you could work with the local school and start a team there. Hmmmm.
Again "Good Luck". It was great being alligned with you at the WMR.

Considered going into the military...yeah, I would fall into this category. I really really tried actually. I wanted to go into the US Navy. I was supposed to go up to Boston University on a NROTC scholarship, and I was actually going to be on their FIRST team, while up there. So, that had my 4 years covered with FIRST. After that, I would've been on 4 years active duty and a surface warfare officer, and then 4 years inactive. I would've been one of their engineers, of course. Unfortunately, all my plans fell through, because the day before I was supposed to leave, I found out that I was disqualified because of my medical history, stupid childhood asthma. Yes, they disqualified me based off of two asthma attacks, once when I was 10, the other when I was 11. ::grumble grumble:: But, I tried to be in the military, and I had all intentions of staying in FIRST, but then again, I wasn't on active duty for the first 4 years. :-) Good luck out there, be careful, and have fun. And you better come back to FIRST in 2003. :-)

They disqualify you because of childhood asthma! Thats crazy, I figured they would overlook somehting like that! Well I guess my knee surgery wasn't the only thing not letting me join the army, I had always wanted to then I got surgery, makes me a little less upset about it, knowing I would have been disqualified anyways!

Christina,
Don't feel bad; I too got medically disqualified for childhood asthma. I was accepted into the Merchant Marine academy, and had everything in to go, but for some reason the prior asthma issue they seem to be picky with.
All of the academies are great; they offer an experience that no other school will give.

Phil,
Yeah, I was really really close to getting accepted into the US Naval Academy...stupid medical. I got my nomination, and everything...but they decided that they didn't like my medical either. But for them, I didn't finish my medical soon enough for them. And they were the ones who postponed it. :-P Oh well.

Had you chosen to go to an academy, Coast Guard definitely, you could continue to be a member of FIRST. Good luck with basic, just pretend it's the middle of January when things aren't going well and it's june when things are well. That way you won't miss it so much.
C-ya,
Carolyn
