Go to Post So let me get this straight. We'll have 6 hours to re-build an entirely new robot that took us 6 weeks originally to make. - [more]

What's easier? Last year or this year?

Just a general question I was wondering...

Was last year's game easier to build a robot for? Or is this year easier?

Or are there too many factors to this question?

Just pick an answer

ps. it seems to me it's easier to build this year because the game sort of asks us to specialize in a single task and be good in that task alone (or add a secondary as well). but most of all, like Ken said somewhere below, we need not build ROBUST robots that need to withstand striking blows from intense competition. So there's a lot more room for innovation, rather than bulky protection. agree?

Last Year, this year was designed to be a pain

I think last years was easier. We knew exactly what we had to do, and what we'd be facing. We knew what the basic strategy of almost every match would be.

I think FIRST has gotten a lot more devious about it this year. Read through the rules/parts lists...and see if you notice that many of them are designed to eliminate specific practices of the past. Or designed specifically to be one more pain in the butt for all of us. Dean was very creative this year, they really thought this out.

Difficulty, in this case, is different depending on who you ask. The old teams that have been in FIRST for a couple of years or more think more along the lines of "What can I do to win the game" or "We can make a great drive train for this!" In this game, some of the ideas these older teams have been working on would not work simply because the way the game was structured. So, for the older guys, this game is more difficult than the ones in the past.

However, if you are a rookie team, you think along the lines of "what can we do to be competative" or "what can we do to do a specific task?" This way of thinking opens up a lot of doors that the veteran teams don't see because they too busy thinking of ways to modify parts they have developed in the off season to fit this game.

I give a lot of credit to Dean and his staff of thinkers. They put together a game where the rookie teams would compeat at the same level as all the older guys. It was a bold step for them, to say the least, but a smart one.
