maximum length of joystick cables
Posted by Joe Ross at 1/31/2001 4:25 AM EST
Engineer on team #330, Beach Bot, from Hope Chapel Academy and NASA/JPL , J&F Machine, and Raytheon. Because of the number of switches and LEDs that we want to have on our operator interface, we need to run the cable from one of our joysticks into the project box and disconnect some of the signals and add some others. Is it going to be a problem to use a 6 foot cable to the project box and then have a few inches of 24 gauge wire inside the project followed by 6 more feet of cable? |

Give the alliance member at the far end of the bench one of your joysticks to control? Anyways, as long as you have good connections that don't come apart and you make good solder joints, it won't matter how long you make your cable (within reason). Holy Toledo batman! |

We have 5 LEDs that need to be controlled which means that we have to plug our project box into ports 1&3 because they are the only ones with LED drivers (4 each). We also need 9 switch inputs. Joystick ports 1 & 3 only give 4 each because the other pins are used for the LED drivers. We are also using 2 joysticks for driving. this means that we need to use a custom cable to get the extra switch input, and I would rather use 2 off the shelf cables than try to fabricate a single custom cable with wires going everywhere. |
