Re: Admissions Process for becoming a team member??

Coach on team #25, Raider Robotix, from North Brunswick Twp. H.S. and Bristol-Myers Squibb. In Reply to: Admissions Process for becoming a team member?? Posted by Angela on 04/24/2001 7:34 PM EST: : For next year our team came up with an original idea: make it so that you have to fill out an application form and "try-out" to be on our team. Yes, it sounds cruel, but it really isn't. Everyone will make it. We're simply doing it to see which new members will be helpful right off the bat in terms of programing or animations knowledge and those who will be most committed. What do you all think of this idea? Just a quick yes or no is ok, but I know I'll get more than that. Thanks for the input! Our team has never really had an admissions policy until this year. Because our sponsor granted us in a matching-grant type of arrangement it left each student with the job of fundraising to fund their trip to the Nationals. We started with 95 students last September. When the work and fundraisers started the group rapidly diminished to 40. Five fundraisers later we were down to 24 and the kickoff was upon us. Each student had a personal fundraising account and was given numerous opportunities to contribute to it by working for the team. They kind of weeded out themselves. Usually it is my job to make the recommendations of who does what based on their interests and evidence of their responsibility. I find that observation of the students and allowing them to prove themselves seems to be the best way to make the final cuts. I am looking for responsible team players which support the group and always do their best. We can fix the rest along the way. (That line is for my kids reading this and thinking of next year...) how to become a 27er

Student on team #27, Team Rush, from Osmtech and Textron. In Reply to: Admissions Process for becoming a team member?? Posted by Angela on 04/24/2001 7:34 PM EST: : for our team you first have to fill ut a long application, including an essay, two teacher recomdations, parent recomendation along with an short paragraph and why they want you to be invloved, a resume and you have to comit to the fund raising (400 each student in the past) you also have to complete 15 hours of comunity service in robotics enducation b4 the saeson kicks off. you also once ur app has been accepted have to do an interviewin which u tell what u can bring to the team how they will benefit from ur presence and what part of the team you are mainly interested in. (build team, business, awards, animation or electrical) After you make it through all of that you have to maintain passing grades all year, and especially around travel this gets strict. we also have the probation thing where ur considered on a trial basis untill the first competition or somthing like that, i was never bad so i never fully understood that one (thanks gosh) but we also as i heard erin mention have to be at all meeting for the entire duration but that is alaways a rule for every meeting every time unless u make special arrangements with the coach ahead of time.just my two cents on how 27 does it -V For next year our team came up with an original idea: make it so that you have to fill out an application form and "try-out" to be on our team. Student on team #180, SPAM Robotics, from Martin County High School and UTC/Pratt&Whitney . In Reply to: Admissions Process for becoming a team member?? Posted by Angela on 04/24/2001 7:34 PM EST: Thanks so much all for your input. I had just one problem in your responces: my team always seem to struggle to keep any members. We've never had any SPAM-wannabes who ever stay on past the first semester. Either they become real team members or leave the team. We start out the year with 65 or so they widdle down to 20 to 25. We have no requirements for staying on the team. Each person must pay a fifty-dollar fee to attend both KSC regionals and nats and most of the rest of our fees are payed by our many sponsors. Our time we put in at meetings and fund-raising events also earns us daily food money at nats and regionals. I guess being a FL team and not having near as much travel costs has something to do with that. The application process is just going to be used to see what people know already (or at least think they not), not really to try to get rid of people who have no skills. Even I have a job on the team. If I can get a job on a FIRST team, anyone can. lol Thanks again for your views. They help greatly. ~Angela Team 180 SPAM |
