Question What role does a robot's ...

What do looks really matter when designing this year's robot?

I know that 191 worked our butts off, but our robot is still looking a little shabby.

Here is one of the few pictures we got before X-Caliper was shipped off:

I think as long as it works it should be alright. And if you want to make it ook nicer, you still have three days after each competition...
Good luck with your 'bot!

gniticxe will become famous soon enough
I'm betting the less sexy robots will be a trend this season. I know for sure that MOE this season reminds me of a school bus, as opposed to the sleek curves of last year. Anyway, this year's competition almost requires that a robot be built robustly and you prolly have to sacrafice a few sexy points to get that.

A robot can be robust and sexy at the same time. Look at teams like 60 or 47 (whenever they decide to show their robot.) I would be willing to bet that CD is going to be impressive in their looks as well as actions. And as far as getting picked for an alliance think about this: If you need a ride to the store are you going to call your buddy with the Corvette or the guy with the multi-tone, rust heap. Sexiness is often a tip-off to overall robot quality.

Sexy Robots

I definately respect the teams that could get their robots looking good! But I have to say that I really hope that the quailty of the more simple looking robots is also taken into consideration.

I know for a fact that some times (especially in our case) that they outward appearance of a bot may come last in the integration process.

Sexy No, Protection Yes

I am more concerned with protection of the components than I am with sexy looking robots. It seems that an effort to dress it up usually provides some sort of extra protection even if it means bundling up all of the wiring and running it along extrusions. I still see many many pictures of robots with all of the controls wide open even the highest point on the bot, I have to believe they are going to get ruined this year with the lack of protection
