Why are there 63 teams at the UTC regional???

Can anyone tell me why there are 63 teams at the UTC regional?

thats like double every other regional! It is going to be the toughest and the longest regional!!!!!

Why is it this way?

Not quite sure how to answer your question CMC. Did you check the size of the other regionals? Of the 17 regionals, 5 are the same size or bigger than UTC, and another 8 regionals have about 50 teams or more - only 4 regionals have less than 48 teams. UTC shouldn't be any tougher than 4 or 5 other regionals - there are a lot of events with really deep, strong fields this year, and there should be a lot of great competition at any number of Regionals.

about 72 hours until the game is unveiled!!!! Here's to another great year! I look forward to seeing many of you at the various events. Best wishes to all in the New Year.

UTC is one of the hardest regionals, there are some *very* experienced teams that go there, and its usually big. Don't worry though, its one of the funnest and its not that tough to keep your head above the water there

Im agreeing with Pamela on this one.

I mean, yes, it was the first regional, so of course theres going to be a lot of teams that have been going there for years.

But trust your robot. If your robot is good, and you can utilize it, thats enough to take it all.

Though...Im also laughing at that water comment, remembering the poor teams who literally got their pits washed out last year

what about the GLR??

I think the GLR is the hardest one to compete in, due to all the major engeering/car companies up here!

I don't know about that

Good robots don't always have to come out of car or engineering companies. We all won't know where the good robots come out of until this years game is unveiled. Some of the best robots may come out of Delphi or Johnson & Johnson or NASA or any company for that matter.

The regionals are all going to be difficult, some have more teams. That doesn't mean that large number makes the largest amount of competitiveness(is that a real word lol) its what the people do with their robot and how reliable it is. The place a robot comes from doesnt determine how good it is. The team thats controlling it does.

I'm not mad, I just wanted to state a point.

I'd have to agree with you there. We had a pretty tough time at West Michigan, though, so I'd have to say it was pretty tough, too.

Brian,

I am not saying that there aren't great robots around, but due to the technology widely aviable up here, I believe it is the hardest competition yet. I am not bashing anywhere, but when I went to VCU last year, the robots down there where "OK." I don't mean to offend anyone, all the robots down there where good, but there wasn't as hard as the GLR. Look at us, we placed 6th down there, but when we came back to the GLR, we came in 24~25th. Forgranted you could say that we had some bad matches, but you do have to admit, some of the better robots come from up here. ONCE AGIAN, I AM NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN, RUDE, OFFENCEIVE, but I believe due to the technology being widely aviable up here compared to anywhere else, you make the better robots up here. Comon, have you seen a robot that has the same drive-train as Chief Delphi? Or us, we used tracks w/ a gear shifter? How how many gear-boxes can take that kind of punishment with some tank tracks??

Sorry for the caps, i just wanted to make my point!

put your egos in check

It's time for everyone to put their egos in check and stop the "state X is better than state Y" and "regional A is harder than regional B." What region of the country a team is from does not determine how successful it is. The amount of technology available to a sponsor does not determine how successful the team is (btw, the technologies a company works with is actually a minor issue since little to none of the advanced technology applies to our 'simple' robots). What makes a team successful is the group of dedicated, motivated, and creative engineers and students working together to build the best darn robot they possibly can.

To keep it on a nice level

We both are judging for a biased view, each of us have seen different regionals, Some may say GLR is the hardest or t he biggest or the best. To them maybe, but I'm not saying its not and I'm not saying it is. It all depends on the game and what teams come out with that year for the game. While a regional can get a good reputation with the teams that attend it, it doesn't carry over every year.

I'm not trying to start a fight, but I would be pretty safe in assuming our sponsors out here have the same amount of technology as the car sponsors out in Michigan and across the country, So no hard feelings but lets keep a level playing field.

I personally find NJ to be a competitive and small regional, close to every team there has a good/competitive robot year after year, giving the regional a competitive edge.

That's just My view

Sorry for any hard feelings.

Question I thought we settled this a long time ago

If I remember correctly we settled this dispute at Rumble at the Rock in Plymouth Mass. We had some of the greatest teams out of the central part of the country and we had some of the best teams from the Northeast. In the end TJ2 took the prize. But I am always up for another competition.

It depends on which rumble you're talking about. We took it in '96, '97, and I believe '98.
