We recieve 2 types of sensors in the kit right?

The optical sensors and the Yaw Rate sensors.

How are the Yaw Rate sensors used?

The yaw rate sensor, commonly referred to as the gyro, detects changes in rotational velocity. It can be used to detect if your robot is tipping, how fast an arm is moving, etc. It is a cool sensor to use if you have a need for it (ie balancing a bridge). I don't see much need for it in this year's game. If you want more technical details, I'd be happy to supply them.

Stability control?

We used the gyro last year for autobalancing on the bridge, but there doesn't seem to be such an obvious application this year.

Maybe it could used damp yaw motions and make a 'squirrly handling' robot easier to drive in a straight line. Has anyone tried such an application?

The only use I could think of for the gyro for this years game was a little bit of a stretch for a gyro

I proposed that we set it to tilt the robot to one side, if we were in a situation that another robot was trying to pick us up, the gyro would tip us off of thier clutches.

I don't even know if a gyro could do this since I suck at anything electrical and am taking my intro to electrical class in college for the 4th time next semester
but It was the only thing I could think of as an application for the gyro

One of the most useful things to do with the yaw rate sensor in the kit is to keep your robot tracking in a straigth line.

You can generate a desired yaw rate, compare that to the actual yaw rate (from the yaw rate sensor) and give one side or the other more or less voltage in order to have the robot turn (or not turn) as desired.

It can make a really tricky machine behave well, especially 2 wheel drive systems.
