Not true. Windows update is (marginally) good for keeping the core OS up to date with security fixes, etc but it very rarely has drivers for third-party cards, etc. You've got to get those straight from the manufacturer.

A number of things can cause this problem, but most likely it's that you've got a bunch of old drivers lying around and Windows is getting confused. Here's my fix:
1. Make sure you have drivers for both your vid card and monitor somewhere on your HD. You'll need them in a minute.
2. Reboot into safe mode. (Press F8 while it's starting up and choose safe mode from the menu that will come up).
3. Delete ALL video adapters and monitors from Device Manager. ALL OF THEM.
4. Reboot. Windows should come up with the "new hardware" message. At this point, tell it to use the drivers that you downloaded in step 1.
5. Reboot.
6. Cross fingers and hope it worked. If not, post back here and I'll see if I can think of anything else.
