People who know team 222 know that we love Mini comps. We host one ourselves and recognize their value. I have sent an e-mail request for info. As long as our robot can still drive we will compete with it.

I haven't figured out how team 222 gets the money, time, vehicles, permission, etc. to go to so many offseason comps. Lol, it was like tooth and nail to get us to go to robot rodeo and we ended up not getting permission so we couldnt take the robot.

Just a short one day event. Basically, the Long Island, NY Team Leaders got together and wanted to create a mini-competition to give us one last hoorah for the Stack Attack and use it as a way to help train our rookie members as well as help get new rookie teams acclimated to what FIRST is about.

This years competition will be very simple, no fancy FIRST field, no autonomous. We just want to get together and run the robots.

We are hoping to get about 12 teams to the event, but so far we only have a handful of teams confirmed.

Money--fundraising helps, but, well i'm not sure exactly...BUT
Time, vehicles, permission, PEOPLE--- SIMPLE--- WE'RE JUST ADDICTED TO FIRST!!!! Our alumni and parents enjoy going on the trips as much as the students! Any chance we get to drive our robot, we at least try to jump on it. As long as we get enough people for a driving crew and a vehicle to haul the bot, we're set.

We're crazy people when it comes to off-season comps:
-Leave @ 4 AM
-Most get NO sleep the night b4(you can usuallly find me grabbing a quick nap at the comp )
-We drive counless miles for nothing more than a CHANCE for trophies(or Tiki's, whichever the case may be)
-Then we get to do it all over again in a week or two

Seeing as how there are only a few long island and city teams who go to off-seasons, mainly 271 263 and 871, you could try registering for the event with Fred but I don't know how much they'd be willing to give a PA team a spot in it. Last year when we had an SBPLI demo/mini event only 5 teams showed up, 263, 311, 353, 810 and 870. And then only 4 teams showed up to support SBPLI at the LIFT forum, teams 263, 311, 353, and 871. But I think the main goal in this event is to give the chance to long island teams to get more active in off-season FIRST, not to host a big competitive event for teams from far away to travel to.

Rob you are 100% correct about the competition being a small and simple event, but from what we discussed at the Team Leaders meeting, I think SBPLI is happy to host any and all teams who attend, just as long as they keep in mind this is not the normal off-season, full field competition that they are used to.

But we definitely need some more teams to register, at last count I think there were only 4 or 5 teams committed, we need at least 6 to run the mini-competition, and I think they would like to have at least 10 - 12 teams.

oh and BTW, 871 was at the mini-comp / demo last year as well :-)

222, you guys are very lucky to be able to do that! Enjoy and have fun. These off seasons are a great way to introduce Rookies to the FIRST competion.... and if you can try to invite potential and current sponsors to the event and/or travel with you. Sometimes it helps for people to see what they're "investing into" and maybe you'll get them hooked. Which means more money and you can go to even more off seasons!

Great Idea- invite sponsors, rookie team, potential rookie teams, and potential volunteers to an off-season event. The event also can give parents of students a better opportunity to see and touch their children's work.
Next year if you can make it a weekend event, a lot of schools will participate or just to show up to support FIRST on LI.
Have demos, robot contests, and robot/team games.
(sell T-shirts, drinks and snacks as fund-raiser too)
FIRST-oholics like me will be on your door steps!
I go to all the LI Regionals except last your because it was at the same time as the NYC Regional.

Hosting a competition of our own i totally understand what you are saying but the reason we compete in off season events as i perceived them is not to compete with the robot and win it all but to support other teams within FIRST. Our comp is one of our teams major fundraisers and it brings awareness to first and really does present great learning opportunities to the rookies and other students. On Nov 15th we will be bringing 23 Members to Ramp Riot most of which are rookies. I just hope that my team isn't being perceived as a team that competes for the sake of competing.

I completely agree with Dave. I am a sophmore and drove over 100 matches my freshman year it was very competeive but the more I participated in FIRST the more I realized it wasn't about all the competing, it was what I was learning. (I learned a lot too. Just ask Cliff or Dave about drill motor brushes.) Going to Ramp Riot was a huge successs for our newbs too. We had them doing everything from rankin, basic scouting, to batteries to robot repair and preperation. I have never seen a bunch of rookies learn so quikly and enjoy what they were doing. To me that is the biggest part of FIRST. Teaching, and having others learn For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science, and Technology.

I know this post may be late for the threads last post but I just registered and I figured I would say it anyway.
