Calibrating speed controllers and joysticks
Do we need to calibrate both the speed controllers and joysticks? I know how to calibrate the joysticks but I'm not sure how to calibrate the speed controllers.
Also, since the speed controllers have this "built-in" deadzone, we should just use this: PWM1 = p1_y instead of: if p1_y>117 and p1_y<137 then skip1: PWM1 = p1_y skip1: Thanks. |

The Victors come precalibrated for the expected out range from the RC, andy, but there may be enough variation in the joysticks at both ends and the middle, that you might want to consider checking the values sent at these positions.

The speed controllers haven't needed user calibration since the Tekan (spelling?) days. The only time I've ever found it necessary to re-calibrate the Victor 883s was to regain the default calibration. All other calibrations should be done via the joystick. The pots in the joystick, however, aren't always perfect. Far from it, in fact. I use a debug terminal to check the range on the joysticks and, if necessary, adjust their value using software.

Recalibrating the Victors as opposed to doing it in the software can be a problem. If you ever have a Victor fail you have to try to get the new one to match the calibration of the old one. If you do the trimming in the software you can just swap it out and be ready to go.
Remember Victors don't like metal chips much although they have been much better about it since last year. |
