Round I Postgame Analysis

Kamen Bowl Quarterfinals
Nor Cal Crushers (#8)
d. Cooney Quest (#1)
103-71
In an upset to last the ages, fresh off their last-second leap-and-bound into the playoffs, the Nor Cal Crushers make their name known by then taking the number one seed out to dinner and leaving them with the check. Cooney played their normal game; generally relying on small but stacking contributions. Key word there: small. Their best contribution came from a defensive effort of 28. But they were simply outplayed by the Crushers. Trent Green led with 22, with runners adding 23, receivers adding 22, and defensive additions totaling 29. In case you can’t tell, that’s the #8 seed moving on.

Kamen Bowl Quarterfinals
Ph!lly Cheesesteaks (#5) d. Coco's Monkeys (#4)
81-60
After that first game, we know now that anything can happen. And anything happened again (albeit being a one-seed difference). The Cheesesteaks easily amassed an advantage using Daunte Culpepper’s 24. But that’s not all; running added 30. For the Monkeys, they had an underperforming day from Peyton Manning. Dillon was able to tack on 18. Unfortunately, lack of receiving and defense put this game squarely into Philly’s grubby little hands.

Kamen Bowl Quarterfinals
South Fl Jets (#3) d. Rhode Island Charge (#6)
74-48
Rhode Island was hoping for the pattern of lower seeds winning to hold up. However, they got their butts handed to them on a silver platter. The Charge had nothing going for them. The usually exciting combo of Brees and McGahee paid off zilch. Receivers were also equal in that department. But the Jets had Hasselbeck taking 13, and a hot running game (Bettis and Tomlinson) combined for 30. The Charge took defense, but it wasn’t enough to stop South Florida from moving on.

Kamen Bowl Quarterfinals
Toronto Fumblers (#7) vs. The Shoats (#2)
68-50
The lowest scoring game produced another upset. For the Phantom Fumblers, this was exactly how they needed it. Their only real opposition came from Tiki Barber’s 10. Toronto was able to go up-and-over with their receivers scoring 24, and an assistance of 16 from the runners. That’s three upsets in four games.

Playoff picture: This is what it’ll be next week for the winners.

Nor Cal Crushers (#8)
vs.
Ph!lly Cheesesteaks (#5)

South Fl Jets (#3)
vs.
Toronto Fumblers (#7)

Nor Cal still has a long road ahead of them (though I now have someone to root for). They faced Philly in Week VI and lost. The Fumblers also have a tough match, having lost to the Jets previously in Week V. The four losers will also face off in their own little tournament.

Cooney Quest (#1)
vs.
Coco's Monkeys (#4)

Rhode Island Charge (#6)
vs.
The Shoats (#2)

That #6 sure is making Rhode Island seem out of place, but as we’ve all seen, anything can happen (especially since The Charge and Shoats never faced in the regular season). The other matchup was last seen in Week VI when Cooney dominated.

This is an exciting tourney. Who will win? Will R.I be able to overcome their low seed in the consolation bracket? Will the Jets #3 be all they need to win the title? Tune in next week for the results of Round II.
