Alternate Joystick question

Posted by Michael Bloomfield at 2/1/2001 11:37 PM EST

Student on team Robotic Plague from Staten Island Tech sponsored by Verizon.

Hey all again. Its me and just curious about something. I know that we are now allowd to use any PC Joystick...but just wondering how hard it is to program. I am guessing that all joysticks use the Same X,Y coordinate system...correct? But is it possible to get all the buttons to work? Do u just have to figure out the variables from the Joystick by messing with it bit by bit and debugging? Any ideas and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot again. Starting to love this forum and only a member for a few hours...LoL. Later.

go ahead an try it, just get someone who has read the control system manual to check the gamepad with a multimeter first.

and be sure to report back what you find.

I've hooked up one of my gamepads to the controller and it did work. I can't remember if the values it put out were spanned correctly (forward above 127 and reverse below) but it did read it. The only thing you have to remember is that the gamepad will give you three values, stop, forward, and reverse. Hope this helps.

The standard joystick port allows for four buttons. Some joysticks have multiple buttons and hat buttons, etc. Only four buttons will be accessible through the port itself. Any other buttons beyond this are usually handled through a keyboard pass-through connector.

Last night our controls team tried an old MadCatz steering wheel that I have. I didn't work because the pots were a different resistance than the supplied joysticks. Has anyone found a brand that works - or have you simply made your own?

Rick
