Hey anton, this gives me an idea...

For a fund raiser, we add a few extra temporary functions on our robot and show it off at Quincy Market or down in the T station...
We can have a bucket for change and we can drive the robot around helping people put luggage on trains...

Well, if you're really desperate to go to Nationals, do what I'm doing. I'm not sure if 73 can make the trip (we're tracking down another possible sponsor where we might JUST get enough money to go to nationals -- anyone interested in helping us out, feel free to contact me . Basically, I told my parents they're going and they're going to take me if the team doesn't go and otherwise they're gonna watch my team compete. The funness of being in college and trying to bum a way to nationals.....

Matt who really, really, really hopes his team can go

I already agreed with you on that one.. I just said that they aren't there necessarily because of their ability jump or duck

So instead of arguing, we are agreeing! Maybe I will buy pizza for you anyways.

Joe

I have got to go with Erin on this one. I don't know if the winning alliance will have a rail jumper/limboer or not, but as more alliances discover that two robots can easily go over the bridge together it starts to negate any time savings such machines can offer.

Mr. Bill

Maybe I'm a bit prejudice, but I think going under the bar will be an important skill. I agree that going over may take some more time than just going over the ramp, but I think driving under can be much faster. I just recall who I thought the best puck driving teams were from 99. The best climbers seemed to be able to just drive up, without extra mechanisms, and 3.5 inches is much easier than the 6 inches those bots were climbing.

Does going under the bar totally limit your abilities? I will admit, there isn't a whole lot of room to package everything, but I think it looks a lot shorter that it really is, and I know we'll be suprised to see what teams can do and still go under the bar.

Basically it boils down to if the ramp is blocked and you want to get to the other side, are you screwed, or can you get there another way?

Will they be a factor in the finals? Of course. . . there are five teams, four on the field. Won't you want one of those to have the ability to simply get to the other side of the field as quickly as possible, w/o dealing with the ramp?

Justin Ridley - MI Roboworks

PS - Expect to see pics of our bot up soon

: i think you also need to be able to get to the other side without using the ramp. I beleave, That skill is going to be the most important thing for a final allince. that way you are not waisting time waiting for the bridge.

Over the bar? Are you a rookie team? It just isn't a good idea. I don't see that happening often, if not at all. The abuse, and complication of doing so is enourmous.

Number one, I don't think you should be discriminating against the rookies. We were all rookies at one point and even as "non-rookies" we have all made rookie mistakes.

Number two, I think that you will be quite surprised to see exactly HOW effective going under the bar can be, especially because this year's competition is a "race" against time.

And finally, I am up for that bet that the National Champions WILL have at least one robot that can and will go under/over the bar." I think that it shall be a very good skill to have and that any team that is able to do it effectively shall add another dimension to their strategy.

Just my personal thoughts...

not only can we go over the bar, we can do it as quick as any robot going over the ramp. And about being a rookie team we have been around about 5 years.

p.s. if you want to see our robot just look at our we page

: Besides being able to pick up the big ball. What do you think will be important skills to have this year

There are lots of important skills in this game... The three always come up: big ball picking, tower controlling, bridge balancing. Beside those threes are the other skills that's consider "important" only in some situation: Gate keeping, stretcher controlling, small ball controling.

But to me, there are two most important skills that robot should always have in order to get a good score in a match: able to touchdown with whatever mean, and doing everything REALLY REALLY QUICKLY. It is one thing that robot can specialize in certain task, but it is another thing when the robot specialize in certain task within 30 sec. or 1 min.

And don't take touchdown for granted... from time to time, it is hard to get a touchdown when there are only a few seconds left in the time-multiplier period.

: Besides being able to pick up the big ball. What do you think will be important skills to have this year

I think the most important skill your team can have this year is the ability to communicate quickly and efficiently just what your robot and drivers are capable of doing (and sometimes not capable of doing).

The information must be accurate and easily understood by the teams you are playing with. Don't say you can pick up the big balls if you can only do it 50% of the time and then it takes 1:30 to do that and get it on the goal.

I'd much rather play with a barely functional robot whose team is honest about their capabilities than one that has a team who is "a legend in their own mind"
