Thoughts of Philly and VCU

After having gone to both of these competitions I have some thoughts, some thanks, and some ranting to do.

1) The volunteer crew at VCU was pretty cool, except for a few exceptions they were really nice and very helpful. At one point I was trying to get the crowd to do the wave, and two girls from the crew offered to go up in the crowd and get them going.
2) Which brings me to another point, the crowd at VCU was very very laconic. They did not do much cheering for other teams (so it seemed to me). Maybe this was as a result of the large amount of rookie teams who don't have prior experience at FIRST, and hence don't quite have the realization of the spirit.
3) On to Phili trip, there was a lot more spirit. Teams had cheerleaders and band members. The crowd was much more willing to cheer for other teams, there was just a lot more camaraderie. There was also a lot of intermingling with the teams in our hotels, though I am sure this was partly due to the fact that there was no girls from our team on the trip and other teams did have girls . It just seemed like a lot friendlier interaction.
4)The limited space in the stands at Phili was rather annoying and the tendency for teams to rope off areas was very unkind. There was an instance where a spectator accidently sat down in some other team's area and was promptly and rudely kicked out. A kid from Team 134 saw this and gave up his seat to the guy and his son and went and sat on the steps. Team 134 also let us in sit in their space. (BTW: Team 134 was just a really cool team, in case that wasn't already obvious). Also teams who roped off spots tended to have bandmembers and cheerleaders in those spots, while I think it's cool to have those people there, but, I think people who have spent 6 weeks building a robot, and who knows how many more planning and getting ready for that build, should have a seat. Maybe I am wrong here but that's just does not seem fair.
5) The volunteer crew at Phili was very . . . zealous about their job. They were trying to hard in the wrong way to keep the aisles open. There was a few times when a team wanted to come down and shake the hands of a team on the field (I missed this but I was told at the time it happened it was appropriate). I myself along with our other control system designer and programmer) was nearly thrown out because we we walked along the fencing at the rear of the field to ask our teammates in between final matches if they needed any help/pieces since we had problems in our first semi-finals match. Luckily it was cable slipping problem and was easily repaired before the next match. I realize they were doing their job but the manner in which it was done was bad, to say the least. The first few days they spent more time telling people to move on then preventing people from using walkie talkies that from what I have been told jam the control systems.
6) As always the official FIRST people were really cool, can't complain about them, nor would I want to. The organizers deserve kudos, they had to deal with problems of lack of power, and the . . .interesting antics of rogue impersonators.
7) Thanks to NASA for the webcast, as always it was cool to know that we were being watched.
8) That was definitely a cool party, Phili seems to get to keep its title for the best party.

Patrik

While I was not at Philli I was at VCU (I even hung out with your team). I know what you mean by teams not cheering for other teams, that's uncool. I tried to cheer for teams by telling them what I though about thier robot, thier match, etc.. personally. I thought that was cooler than cheering in the stands ( I was rarely in the stands anyway). Eventhough, at one point a spotlight hit me and I started dancing, another team, Tucker I think, threw a cardboard cutout of a paw print to me and I started dancing with it and waving it around. As far as the staff, yeah most of them were cool, except when they were lining people up on the field and having a power trip. They got down right rude a few times. Oh, well. It was fun (more fun than I might be having at nats with my new set of rules.)
