Another question about qualification

I am still unsure of the way teams can qualify for nationals. On the FIRST website it says, "Teams may qualify through performance during the prior year (2002) based on a point system. Five (5) points are required to qualify." I am on an even numbered team, and we earned two points last year. The way I understand it these points carry over to this year. However, if we were to say win two regionals and gain six points, do these count towards qualifying? The reason I am not sure of this is because it says performance during theprior year (2002) and not the current year (2003) Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Lets suppose you win one of the regionals next year. Or you win a Regional Chairman's award. Or a Regional Technical Award (Driving Tomorrow’s Technology, Industrial Design, Leadership in Controls, and Quality Awards). You automatically qualify for the Championship Event. The points associated with it should carry over to the next year, but it sounds redundant because 2004 is an even year. On the FIRST website, it states how you can qualify for the Championship Event through prior year's performance(2) and how you can qualify through this year's performance(3). Someone shout "fool" if I am wrong.

I think they should really post this info on the FIRST web site imean they have it databased somewhere and i dont think anyone would be upset having it publiclly know who does and doesnt qualify

Basically...

Points earned in one year(for example, 2002) count toward the NEXT year's championship(in this example, 2003)...unfortunately, if you didn't get the required 5 points to qualify, you have to go under the other heading for this year, which means win an event, an qualifying award, etc...

I think that is a good idea. There would be a lot less questioning if FIRST just put up a page that listed all teams who have enough qualifying points from the previous year (2002). Theoretically it shouldn't be that much work, because not many teams are able to qualify that way. Perhaps someone should contact FIRST.

We know that. What they're trying to figure out is if last years (2002) points are combined with this years (2003) points. If i am mistaken then sorry to and to the confusion.

No combining of points I don't think

Qualifications based on past years,
"All former Championship Chairman’s Award winners (1992-2002)
Prior year Championship winners
Teams that have participated in every competition year (1992-2002)"

Qualifications based exclusively on this year, 2003.

"Current year Regional Event winners
Current year Regional Chairman’s Award winners
Current year Technical Award winners at Regional Events(Driving Tomorrow’s Technology, Industrial Design, Leadership in Controls, and Quality Awards)"

Qualifications based exclusively on Last year,

"3. Teams may qualify through performance during the prior year (2002) based on a point system. Five (5) points are required to qualify.
Regional or Championship Divisional winner - 3 points
Regional or Championship Divisional finalist - 2 points
Regional Chairman's Award winner - 3 points
FIRST-Judged Award winner at Regional or Championship Event - 2 points
Top Seed at Regional or Championship Event - 1 point
Top Rookie Seed at Regional or Championship Event - 1 point "

And Finally,
"4. The balance of the openings will be available on an Odd/Even basis based on Team Number and Championship year.
For the 2003 Championship, (this year) Odd numbered teams can register on a first come/first served basis (please note last year Even numbered teams were eligible.)

So there you have it, simple huh???

Sorry forgot my sources page the first time I posted this,

Correct!..I think. FIRST outlines a few ways in which you can qualify.

Team 100 is an even numbered team, so they can't register for the 2003 Championship Event on a first come/first served basis.

Team 100 has not been involved in the FIRST program since 1992, so they do not qualify that way. They have never won the Championship Chairman's Award and were not part of the Championship Event Winner's alliance in 2002, so they do not qualify that way.

In 2002, team 100's performance merited them two points towards qualification for 2003's Championship Event. FIRST, however, requires that a minimum of 5 points be earned in 2002 to qualify for the 2003 Championship Event, so team 100 does not qualify that way.

To qualify for the 2003 Championship Event, team 100 has to get one of the following awards during the 2003 season: Regional Event Winner, Regional Chairman’s Award Winner, Driving Tomorrow’s Technology Award, Industrial Design Award, Leadership in Controls Award, or Quality Awards.

If team 100 earns any points during the 2003 season, they count towards qualification for the 2004 season. The points are, in essence, redundant at that point because even numbered teams are offered "first come/first served" that year.
Quote:
if we were to say win two regionals and gain six points, do these count towards qualifying?
If team 100 wins two regionals in 2003, they will qualify for the 2003 Championship Event (based on current year performance) and the 6 points that are gained from the victories will be used to determine qualification for the 2004 Championship Event.

"Blah, never again!"

Thanks Joel, I like examples that use real team's situations! Much more easy to explain!!!

Now care to analyze and do that for the rest of the teams???? lol
You could hire yourself out for donations towards your team as a consultant! lol

Joel, Elgin, and others.....

About the points being "redundant"....keep in mind, FIRST has NEVER said anything about qualifying criteria for beyond the 2003 season. They committed to having odd/even registration last year and this year so that it was fair to all teams. By 2004, there will be over 1000 teams and 25-30 Regionals, so it is safe to assume there will be some change in the National Format and/or how a team qualifies after the 2003 season is over. My guess is that you can still assume there will be something similar to the 5 points from the previous year and also the current year qualifying system. However, I don't think any team should assume the odd/even system will exist as is in 2004. It may, or it may not, I just wouldn't want any new teams to get the wrong idea from these threads and assume even teams can register in 2004. I don't think FIRST or teams will have a clear idea of qualifying beyond this year until the Team Forum after the 2003 season is over.

Looking forward to another great year for FIRST in 2003,

Jason

(and Soukup, you didn't think I could make a single paragraph post!)

True, It would be nice to get in writing fro FIRST a dedicated answer to how long the qualification process will be in effect. Set it in stone people! But FIRST has to be VERY flexible as you said cause more teams and what not so we'll see what happens, only time will tell.
