If you are hanging from the bar on the ramp and touching the side supports (but not using them for support in any way) do you still get the points for hanging?

I think that if you look at Update #1 Q3 that might give you some clarfication. Q3 also refers you to rule GM23. It seems to me like what they're getting at is they only want you hanging and they don't want you using any other part of the goal as a support. Which means that the potential for the whole pendulum effect is still there and still haunting.

Hope this Helps,
-Justin

At kickoff they said you're allowed to be touching the side supports if it happens accidentally, but you cannot design a system to interact with those supports intentionally.
right? or was i just hearing things?

Jon,

I don't specifically remember what they said about that at Kickoff. However I think it is within the spirt of FIRST that if when you arrive in the hanging postion it happens that you do it in such a way that the sides of the goal prevent you from moving I don't think they'll have a problem with that. I think more what they don't want is a device that will prevent you from moving. Based on what I've seen I'd say your interpretation is correct so long as you don't have a device that comes out of the machine and latches on to the goal to keep you from moving. Of course it will as always be up to the refs to determine what they consider accidental.
