Your team contact was sent an invitation from Ericka about a week ago via e-mail.

Each summer FIRST holds a 1 day event at FIRST Place to gather information from team leaders. Each team can send 1 rep for their team. Last year there were 150+ teams represented.

This is a great time to let the fowlkes at FIRST know what you are thinking and voice concerns over many different matters.

The date is Aug. 17th.

Check with your team contact.

Contact FIRST for more detailed information.

...but then again I'm always in the area...

I don't know if I'll actually be at the forum.. I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to be my team's rep.. And I'll have to work that day unless I ask it off.. But I'll be in the area.. About 15 mins or so away from FIRST.. So for all of you that are coming in early and leaving late.. We should do something..

Kate

Hey,

The position of a 'captain' was started this year on my team. The team did not buy the idea of a captain. I believe that the position is needed. I have saw that there are captains on many other team. If you have this position on your team or any position like it. Can you please state your case on why, we need a captain, or why, teams don't need a captain.

just to be clear (cause i don't total understand why this was put in thread to my message).. i'm not a team 'captain'.. i'm actually a college student mentoring some high school kids.. we'd be closer (and for my team basically serve in) to engineer's role rather than a high school student captain..

as for my opinion on it.. it's slightly mixed.. i think that each year, on every team, there's a couple of students who 'rise to the top' in terms of their effort and work... they simply are on a different level of involvement than other students.. and it is natural that those students would become the captains... and because those students are naturally at the forefront, i see no real need to specially name anyone 'captain'... because sometimes that does make others feel that their work isn't noticed or appreciated in comparison to the captain's...

however, i feel in making team decisions.. if they fully aren't made by students, students should at least be allowed representation in matters... and that's the only place i see there as being a need for a captain...
