Engineer on team #111, Wildstang, from Wheeling and Rolling Meadows and Motorola . Posted on 8/4/2000 9:46 AM MST Anybody care to guess how many teams will compete next year? How about ten years from now? Here are the numbers so far and, based on a growth rate of 40% per year, the projections for the next ten years: ___________________teams ________total_____competing ________teams______at_the Year__competing___nationals 1992______28 1993______25 1994______44 1995______59_________48 1996______93_________74 1997_____155_________113 1998_____199_________166 1999_____269_________206 2000_____373_________268 2001_____522_________375 2002_____731_________525 2003____1024_________735 2004____1433________1030 2005____2006________1441 2006____2809________2018 2007____3932________2825 2008____5505________3955 2009____7707________5537 2010___10789________7752 |

By that time however, we will be playing in the third dimension. Which means that wheels will not be needed and we can play 25 teams at a time on a virtual playing field. |

That takes the fun out of the competition and experience. I want robots crashing into each other in real time. I guess FIRST will have to change the current format to support that number of teams.
