Looking for Network Table protocol documentation.

Although I know there a lot of existing fun tools for accessing Network Tables, we wanted to try to implement some of the protocol directly to show students how to communicate between our driver station laptop and the cRIO. Any pointers to a Network Table protocol spec? Trying to reverse engineer the protocol from the code samples ins't as much fun as it sounds. Thanks.
