Say goodbye to Excite@Home?
For all you @home users:
It seems that Excite@home could be pulling the plug on cable modem subscribers... http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1004-200....html?tag=lthd http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/2001...tehome_dc.html |

I got a letter from AT&T a few days ago, but I only skimmed it. It said something to the effect that they're trying to keep everyone's internet service running, but there may be an outage. If @Home crumbles (probable) AT&T will most likely take over as ISP, but there could be a period of time that we're without our service. Now I've got to go home and re-read that letter.

I've also heard (from a co-worker) that it may just be the e-mail & webhosting Excite@home services that will die. The actual internet service may still work.
So ... I'm not 100% sure ... |

my letter says..
In my letter AT&T told me that they were building their own network just in case Excite@Home isn't given a grace period by the government. Without this grace period AT&T doesn't get enough time to purchase Excite@Home's assets, which would make its value next to nothing. If they don't get to purchase Excite@Home they will switch to their own network and our email addys will end with attbi.com instead of home.com. For example joelster@attbi.com would be my email address not joelster@home.com. I don't really like it, but on the other hand I only care about speed.

Yeah...a bunch of people I know from the Toronto / Ontario area of canada have Rogers Cable as their provider.
Their e-mails have changed over in the past few weeks from user@home.com to user@rogers.com. |

Prodigy@home
I have Prodigy@home, which is somewhat affiliated with Excite, which helped re-launch Prodigy a few years back. Within the past weeks, I got a few Prodigy@home update newsletters about a name change and such, and my eMail has switched back to ...@prodigy.net, as it was before I got on their cable service. Comcast, my cable company, has assured the NJ/PA users of its cable distribution service that their @home services will be continued by either their @home affiliator or Comcast or a 3rd party, and will continue to be delivered over the same cable lines. The @home services were all intertwined, and it appears that they will still be. But I have my good, trusty, Prodigy internet, and that's all I care about.

Cox @ Home seems confident

So it seems like this will be dragged on until someone has bought it out, which is most likely ATT |

OH, the humanity! Say it isn't so!
I don't want to go back to a 56k Modem. I don't think I can go back to 2-3 hour downloads. Wayne D. |

Yeah, yeah, cry me a river.
56K life isn't too bad, though I admit that I really do want a cable modem now that they're available in our area.~Tom Fairchild~, who's having a real hard time feelin' sorry for you guys. ![]() |

Tom
When I HAD a 56k modem I downloaded a 2 meg file. It took me almost 2 hours. With cable I downloaded a 20 meg file in 2 minutes. Wayne D. |

A Temporary Solution...for me at least
Well, if Comcast(the provider for my area) does temporarily lost service, I can always go back to using the T3 at work and carrying things home on a CD-R or Zip Disk...of course, for whatever reason, they only ran 10Base/T for the internet link within the office...

When you're only way of getting on the internet is high speed, you get used to it. Going back would be a hard thing. Although, my cable at home is so slow sometimes, I swear 56k could be faster j/k |

LoL, okay Nate, that just crossed the line. You're complaining because your network can only get you 10megs a second out of your T3 line?
~Tom Fairchild~, who's weeping heavily for Nate's loss. j/k(Sorry Nate! Just gotta pick on ya, even though I'm using a T1 here at school) |

Excite at home isnt in our area, but we have Insight@home, the cable TV provider. A few months ago the cable provider had some financial problems, and closely avoided getting their plug pulled....now its 40 dollars a month...thats the only reason why i am still using 56k....

56k!
I love my 56k!!!
It runs fast and it connects very fast.... Plus i was wondering what service Wayne Doenges had where it took him 2 hours to download a 2mb file.. (i think i've downloaded a 20mb file in that time) plus it also depends on the website that you are downloading the file from, some places limit you to how fast you can download it... |
